Depressed Dog ?!

Jake isn't eating ! Since he was marking the walls , I set him (and Sadie) up outside in a building , still played with them each day , but he hasn't been eating . He's lost quite a bit of weight ! Is he depressed because he isn't in with us , or could be somthing else ?

He could very well be depressed. Are you there for his meals? How long has he not eaten for? I trust you've been watching him still, I'm sure you know the drill... Is he peeing, pooping, vomitting, drinking?

When you go out to play with him, does he act differently than before?

I would suspect an illness first. He is an adult male with his mate - he shouldn't be depressed to the point of not eating. I doubt he has bonded to the point of depression since you've only had him a month.

Luvit - how long has it been since he ate? Have you tried other foods? Anything else abnormal?

Moo , yes I've been there for mealtime , he's just kind of picking at it . He drinks fine , pees fine , no vomiting . Dax , he Hasen't really eaten much for about a week . Since everything is relativly new for him , I had thought it might be stress , and didn't worry over much , until I see him losing weight now . He also has liquid stools now too , not just runny , but like soup . I just saw that tonight . A trip to the vet might be in order . Can you think of anything going off food and having diahrrea that bad might be from ?

Is there anything outside that he could have got into ? Could be the change in enviroment and he has picked up a virus. He is up to date on his shots right ? I would get him some keopectate ( sp ? ) and give him that tonight and take him to the vet asap. Is he running a fever ? Try giving him some plain white bread and some milk until you can get him to the vet.

I don't think he got into anything , but I guess I can't be 100% sure . He is up to date on shots . He isn't running a temp at all , though this evening , he seems more lethargic than his usual self . Is milk a good idea when he has the runs ?

Red face

I don't think it would hurt, but you could always give him some cheese instead. You want him to get some nutrition and something like cheese or ilk is good because it is higher in fat and has good nutrition, if he is not eating. But for the runs , if it has been a few days now then he is probably dehydrated and needs liquid. Electrolytes would be the best for him, but he may not want to drink thoses, they are salty tasting.

Just thoughts, I would certianly at least call the vet and see what they suggest.

Hope that helps.

I hope he is feeling better soon.

Don't give milk. GO to this thread and compare what's coming out
http://www.prodoggroomingsupplies.co...ead.php?t=3923

Here is what the vet book recommends.
* withhold all food for 24 hours
* give small amounts of water or ice to lick
* use Kaopectate (same weight dose as for humans)
* as he responds - start with easily digestible diet containing no fat (rice, eggs, etc)

If he doesn't respond within a couple of days - you should probably go to the vet.

Milk is not good for the runs. Cottage cheese or yoghourt is though. For non dairy, pumpkin works, and carrots... Carrots don't work on mine, they come out whole, but, generally...
