Unhappy PLEASE Read!

I would like everyone to please read this, and pass the story on. With posting this I hope to simply make people aware of what happens everyday, in the areas where we all live.

I have been doing rescue for almost 4 years, and fostering for almost 3. It seems like just when I have seen it all, it only gets worse. I am not an overly sensitive person, I am not one to cry at the drop of a hat, but I will admit I am more emotional when it comes to animals.

I recieved an email a few days ago, and truly didn't give it much thought as I already have a full plate. THANK GOD, somebody paid attention to this email!! The email was about an abandoned dog left outside. I guess some elderly neighbor ladies were feeding him. Animal control had been called, but simply put notices on the door.

This is where I am so mad at myself, I knew of the situation and chose to do nothing! Today I was going out with my all breed rescue friend to the home of a young Beagle to try to work with him, his owner, and the cat.
On the way she asked if I wanted to stop by the emergency clinic, one of her friends went out to check on the dog that had been left.

THIS WAS THE MOST HEART WRENCHING THING I HAVE EVER BEEN THROUGH! Get the tissues ready...
We pulled up, saw Michelles pick up truck it was obvious they had put this dog on the bed of the truck, which at first sight I was outraged. I thought "WHY would they put the dog in the bed of the truck?"
I went in, saw Michelle and Ann talking with the Vet, the vet was trying to convince them to put the dog down, there was obvious emotion on their faces. The dog was not in the room. I asked if I could see the dog, they allowed me in the back to view him.

I could not hold it together. The dog was strapped onto a piece of plywood, it was a makeshift strecher. He was covered in his own feces, and urine along with mud. They literally had to peel him from the frozen ground! He was obviously emaciated, and had no muscle tone at all. He had a tilt to his head. He had a severe infection on his belly from urinatin on himslef because he was too weak to even get up.
But somehow, he responded to us petting his head and talking to him, he had life in his eyes.
He was estimated to be about 10-12 years old, a maybe chow black lab mix. He was a big guy.
To start treating him with Xrays, fluids, and pain meds we were looking at about 1000.00, he would have to remain in the hospital for about 3-4 days. I suggested we heart worm test, of course he was positive.

We had a huge legal issue on our hands because he was not our dog, we were scared to make the decision to euthanize. We had the police involved, and they went to the home of the Animal Care and Control director, and made him come down.

We made the decision to let him go, after an hour of staying with him talking to him, stroking his head, and wiping away his urine.

This was THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!
HOW in the world could someone do this to a helpless animal?
This dog was so bad a few days ago he was unable to even lift his head to drink!

Oh no! What a horrible story. You did the best you could, and we know that. This isn't your fault at all, it's just some heartless jerk. You were probably the best moments of this dogs life. The first person to show him love, and I'm sure he appreciated it.

My tears are rolling. What goes around comes around. People that do things like that to defenseless animals will probably burn in HADES!

There really wasn't a choice, had I known what I was walking into, I would not have done it.

This may sound very weak of me, but that is why I could never go into rescue or foster. For ever 2,4,6, that you save and find a home for my heart would break knowing I would have to give them away. They would leave with a little piece of my heart, but just picturing what you saw today would utterly destroy me. Why do you think I put people like you on a pedistal? I would not make it in this type of work very long.

I dont think I belong on a pedistal, I foster because I LOVE it. Its true I send a piece of my heart with each dog, but thats ok.

Today was not OK in my book, I have alot of guilt, but I know i shouldn't.
