why I do what I do.... about Barbie
I just had to share this email from Barbie's new Mom with all of you. I think it depicts why all of us in rescue do what we do. We can only hope for such results normally......... I'm so very pleased to share this with all of you! It's a little long but worth the read IMO..
Wow, we made it home very well. Darby (AKA Barbie) as I have decided to call her, is absolutely perfect! She found a comfy place on a nice snuggly blanket on my lap and rode looking out the window until we got to the ferry at Kingston. We went out for a walk on the leash for a bit to stretch her legs. She stayed awake during the ferry crossing, and upon landing her and me both got sleepy and napped very peacefully together until a gas stop 40 minutes from home. We got out on a leash and stretched legs again. We made it home in the dark to be greeted happily by Maggie the collie. We were a lot later than we had expected to be so our daughter had gone home in the afternoon and had not fed the horses. We got out and put her on the leash while feeding by car light. The horses were in the big pasture but she was not impacted by their presence at all. She and the collie (Maggie) met and it was a non event! She ran around on the “retractable 25’ leash” and went potty and smelled every where. We spent about 15 minutes outside with her and Maggie before coming in. Inside she met Mocha the elderly dog. Non-event again. The cats actually came right up to her and sniffed noses. I cannot say the cats feel comfortable with her; however they are not threatened by her at all. She met Slinky the ferret and would like to keep distance between herself and him! He wanted to play with her but she doesn’t like the way he smells yet!!! She followed me around constantly as we unpacked. I got a stool and she got up on it and jumped on the bed just fine. Of course she slept at my feet on the bed all night and was very happy! Bob and I went out together with her and the collie to feed horses this am. I did not put her on the leash at all. She was PERFECT. She does not even want to go in the pasture and ignores the horses and their space so far. She ran and ran and ran after doing her duties and came very well when called. Maggie tried to play with her and she was quiet happy to engage. We walked all over around our home and part of the property (we have 10 acres and are surrounded by a lot of acreage as well). She was not under our feet but stayed very near as she sniffed all over. She did find a nice somewhat fresh pile of horse manure in the upper pasture and rolled and rubbed in it! Green on her blond coat, oh well, you and I had talked about a bath! She came in and was a sweetheart about the bath (shower). Had to use shampoo but was careful to not get her belly wet any more than necessary. She is very perceptive. After the shower, she was very well behaved and toweled off well and was very happy. Breakfast was a surprise to her but she ate some and has a chicken jerky treat. She was dry enough so we went back outside and walked all around the house so she can learn where she lives. She went potty just find and has had no accidents. She has been at my side and follows me everywhere, even if I am the only one who leaves the room. The other dogs must stay in the laundry room (collie hair, and Mocha pee’s everywhere) so she has (and will continue to) have very special privileges. She has a comfy bed here by my computer in the office where she is sleeping very peacefully at the moment.
Teresa, I have cried so many tears of joy and thankfulness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is perfect. She is not Charlie and I do not want her to be, I want her to be her and have her own identity. She is certainly filling a huge hole in my heart though and doing a spectacular job at it. We are going to be soul mates for the rest of her life. Thank you so very much. This was so worth the wait and anticipation. I look forward to teaching her lots of tricks and being Darby McWire that lives at Horse Tales Nursery. We would love to do a poster of her and her story here in the near future to post at the nursery. I will certainly run a “proof” of that by you before print as we will certainly be thanking the “Big Dog Project” for their wonderful work of rescuing animals.
My heart could not be fuller today!!!
With Love: Patti & Darby
