For small pools that is. My MIL was telling me last year that thiere is a certain pill or pellet that you can put in water fountains, baby pools etc that will keep mosquitos away and will not hurt your dog if they bathed or drank the water. We have three plastic baby pools for our pooches. If we fill them up and dump them every day during the summer you are looking at big time mosquito development. Even if we decided to leave the pool water over night these pills/pellets will deter mosquitos and if the dogs drank the water out of their pools there is no physical or mental effect on the dog.

Silly idea fairlight, but it works. Since misquitos "prefer" standing water and we have rock garden pools that are in the landscaping with rocks, and obviously not able to move, this is what we found to work. Keep in mind- we live in the woods, and the misquitos can be bad. I took simple aquirium air stones, with a outside insulated air pump. This breaks the water surface slightly, and keeps the misquitos from coming to start with. You can get them at any pond type supply store, or even just use a regular aquarium pump with a large air stone attached. ( and no risk of chemicals..)

No good BM. Your little ponds of water is stationary. For me these are just the plastic pools that kids have. The heat and humdity is so bad here that I can let the pools stand for just a few hours and I may be looking at hundreds of mosquitos and if I dump the pools out every day I am looking at infestation. I don't know what these pills or pellets are called just that my MIL said you can drop them in a pool of standing water and it will keep the mosquitos away and the water would also be safwe for the dogs to drink if they decided to take a slurp or two.

But if you break the water surface, you will not get the larvae to start with. This actually is common practice for people of my family that live in Florida. They gave it a try and it worked. Break the water surface to discourage the misquito larvae..

But these are just little pools. I can't have wires and electrical chords running across the yard. I don't know who would get hurt or electrified first....me or Uma.

Its not hard to run a conduit line and its a permanent fix verses using chemicals. also those bait traps= uh no- you may catch a few thousand but really that odor is more so calling them to the area 10 times more .. All you need is the water breaking the surface. So with a big pool use something with more power- like a pond pump but the idea is the same. I do not use chemicals around my dogs. I do not care what anyone says- there are no long term effect studies on pets.
