A little concerned

For the past few days my dog has been wheezing about not all the time but I would say a few times in a day. It has been goin on for a while. I thought maybe he had caught kennel cough from my new shelter pup that I had because she had caught it in the shelter. Took her to the vet to get her checked out and they gave her some meds and she is all better. My dog is not only weezing but now there is a added hard dry hacking cough that sounds like when we cough when you have pnemonia or a regular cold. The kind that hurts your throat type. That, also is a not a all the time thing it actually just started a couple of days ago. The wheezing started a few weeks before I even got my other dogs. I have looked up some things and thought also that it could be him not breathing right from the fire that I have goin in my apartment cause sometimes the wood gets a little smokey but I would open up the windows to air out. He eats normally and no loss in weight. His exercise is the same he plays with my other dog Zoey and they go at it various times in the day. I plan on taking my dog to the vet because I am scared it could be heartworm or something like cancer. I am hoping to get a little light shed by some of you guys who may have experienced this same thing and maybe kind of tell me what I am up against before goin to see my vet.

It sounds like kennel cough. If that is the case, it will take a couple of weeks to go away even with meds.

Best to have a vet confirm it.
