Wheezing when asleep

Hi all

I have a 4YO min poodle called Coco. About 9 days ago Coco ran upstairs and seemed to be choking and finding it hard to catch his breath. I picked him up and ran downstairs with him thinking it would be a vet visit but it stopped and he was running around like normal so I thought I'd keep a eye on him.

4 days ago he was fast asleep on the sofa and he was doing a audible wheeze and clearly taking deep breaths. I woke him up and picked him up and the wheezing stopped but he continued taking deep breaths for a few minutes then he jumped off my lap and coughed (sounded like clearing throat) and was back to normal again. Then 2 nights ago exactly the same thing happened. Apart from this he's been fine. I rang the vets earlier to order my other boys repeat script and mentioned it to the receptionist and she told me to ring the vet tomorrow morning and see what he says.

What do you think it could be? He's got no signs of a cold or anything and breathes fine any other time and tolerates exercise well so I'm stumped. Thank you.

I say, go to the vet. Could be so many things that I really think a full checkup at the vet is the only way to go.

It sounds a bit like reverse sneezing, and that isn't anything to worry about. One of my dogs' had this condition.

It isn't reverse sneezing. He does reverse sneezing occassionally and its completely different.

I called the Vet but he hasn't rang me back yet. I was wondering if it could be a trachea problem or something like that.

My Beagle used to wheeze in his sleep, he had asthma. He did not take deep breathes as you described. Let us know what your vet says when he calls back.

Still nothing from the Vet. I'll have to chase him up first thing tomorrow.
