Changing wormers

I was speaking with a breeder the other day who is also licensed to sell wormers (over her you have to be licensed to sell the vet strength stuff) and I was asking her what she worms her puppies with. She said that she rotates what she uses on both her puppies & adults because the worms can get resistant to the same treatments.

I know we are now finding that Frontline isn't as effective for fleas in the UK and that some people are saying that the fleas are now building up resistance to Frontline but I'd never heard it said about worms.

Soooooooo what do you think, what have you heard, what are your experiences?

We rotate wormers in horses for exactly that reason, not to mention some wormers kill some worms while other work on other ones. We are haveing the same trouble here in the U.S. with flea control as well.

I use Intercepter (sp) for our monthly heart worm. I don't worm other wise unless we go to a hunt test or an area that I know is flea infested. For that I give the dogs Ivermectin by mouth from the vet.

Ivermectin is a good source for killing round, pin and whip worms. Revolution will kill round and pin but will not kill the whip worms... I think it's good to rotate any parasite medication regularly. I know we used to do that with the horses back when we had a farm.

My vet says Frontline and Advantage are practically one in the same. That pill that is coming out soon is supposed to be similar to Revolution

Are you talking about worm preventative meds?
I use Advantage for fleas and Frontline plus on fosters that have or came from the woods and do or may have ticks.
If I find round worms I use Nemex. If I find tape worms, I take them to the Vet and get a shot for them.

Sue - that's interesting that you do that with horses. This lady also own horses!

Sheltiemama - I guess it makes sense to rotate things like this.

Teresa - I guess I should have explained better . I'm talking about treating worms. Here in the UK the recommendation is to worm every 3-6 months regardless of if you think your dog has worms or not. It's simply not the done thing to take in a sample to check for worms, we just give regular treatment. With Poppy it's closer to 3 months for Poppy since she seems to like fox poop
