Rejecting puppies?

This is not my dog so I am making this post on behalf of my friend.

She said her dog Pancake is leaving her litter of 8 for long periods of time, just ignoring them and usually she has to make her go back to them to nurse. She said she leaves them for hours, wont lay down for them to nurse, looks ready to bolt, the puppies are 6 days old. So she is worried Pancake may be rejecting them. is she? if she is what should she do?

Doesnt sound like rejection. Sounds like or could be the mother is ill and doesnt feel well. Questions- what breed, how old is the mom, did she have a oxytocin shot after the birth. also - what is she feeding the mom- how much etc. Low bcomplex foods the females can be very moody- usually corrected with red raspberry.
I am trying to help but I need more information..

Or she could have a mastitis!.
Soar, reddish nipples that are painful to the touch!.Would take Mom and the pups to the vet,for a check up!!.

Bingo- or a uterus infection. That is why I asked about the oxytocin shot.

she says
mom is Jack russell/sheltie ... She was taken to vet 14 hours after birth along with puppies for a check up, vet didnt give her a shot or mentioned that she needed one... Mom is getting free choice purina puppy chow, Mom was adopted so we arnt 100% sure of age... over 1 1/2 though.
in reguards to mastitis... her nipples arent sore, only redness look like little hickies (not on the nipple, about an inch away from two seperate nipples) they just look like hickies where pups have tried to latch on.. they are not sore
shes still very perky and affectionate.. she has no fever 100.7

oh and i was worried bout uterus infection cause i didnt see all the placenta come out ( fell asleep ) but the vet said not to worry, she would start running a fever and there would be a pu ssy discharge.. only discharge she has is kind of goopy brownish blood (vet said this was normal) again no fever

The fact she has dimples in the nipples sounds like early mastitus. A normal teat of a dog is resilient and bounces back- not leaving marks or 'hickies". She needs to go to the vet ASAP.

she needs a new vet. Any retained placenta can easily make an infection. Add her behavior- she needs to to the vet- hopefully one that knows what they are doing..

Ask her to join the forum.. The teat should have almost no evidence at all of any deformity at all in a normal nursing. She needs a vet please..
