Duke has kennel cough ... AGAIN

ughh someone please explain to me why they get vaccinated?
it doesnt seem to be working.
this is the second time in a month.
i still have cough tabs from last time.
do you think that would help?
ive heard that the cough tabs can do more harm than good.
i guess kennel cough is going around the animal hospital but no other dogs seem to be getting it
he already seems to be having allergies to something so theres too much going on with him to figure out whats what.
ive talked to the vet and theyve been telling me the same thing;
watch and wait for the allergies.
hes on hydro-b and benadryl but he still seems to be itchy.
do you think i should just put him on HA food and see how that works out?
its getting to be time to buy more food anyways.

i dont know do you guys have any insight as to what to do about all of his problems?

I'm sorry to hear that he's still not well but it probably isn't Kennel Cough again but that he didn't recovery properly the first time. My vet said they can often have set backs. You can supplement with vitamin C and also give children's cough medicine (for a chesty cough) to help him. Check with your vet which brand they recommend. Honey is also good to help them.

Regarding the allergies what is happening? Can you give us a bit more info like what food he's on? Also what breed is he?

Hugs to you - it's tough dealing with our furkids when they're sick.

Kennel cough has many different strands so vaccinating IMO is useless. Just support the immune system with VitC and grapefruit seed extract.

For allergies I would try a different food like EVO if in fact it is a food allergy.

thank you!
hes a lhasa/shih tzu mix and hes on natures recipe vegetarian diet.
he gets chicken beef and deli meats for protien.
as for the allergies; hes REALLY itchy.
he is constantly chewing on his feet and itching his ears.
he has a history of yeast infections but he is fine with that for now.
my vet wants to do a food allergy test.
like i said hes on Hydro-B and benadryl for now.
it seems to be helping a little bit.
ive never heard of honey helping cough?
do i just give it to him straight from the bottle or saturate it?
i can get some vit c and i have childrens cough syrup.

Well, for such a small dog I would just get the chewables and crush them up. I do highly recommend going to a local health food store and finding the grapefruit seed extract or Black leaf tincture also.

ANd I would definitely try EVO if you would like a sample I can send you one just PM me your address.

Just a couple of thoughts:

Dogs are most commonly allergic to beef, chicken, and main protein sources. If you want to help the allergies, I'd look into a fish diet. Such as Wellness Fish and Potato. Also, duck, venison, kangaroo.. they are all called novel protein diets. This usually makes a big difference.

As for the vaccine and kennel cough.. it's like us with the flu vaccine. Is your dog exposed to kennel cough a lot? Doggie daycare? Grooming? Boarding? Dog parks? When did the dog get the kennel cough vaccine? Some veterinarians recommend it every 6 months.

If the dog has a productive cough, vets recommend using a cough suppressant. It helps the irritation and help heal the trachea. More importantly would be antibiotics? When was the last time the dog had kennel cough? If it's recently, this could be a secondary infection or a reoccurrence. In which case, you should see the vet and get some antibiotics for a 10 day course.

Good luck.

yes he is.
i work at an animal hospital and i guess an animal control dog came in a spread kennel cough through the whole hospital.
hes also in a doggie play group but none of them were coughing.
he got the vaccine only a month ago.

Good luck.
last time he had kennel cough was only about 2 and a half weeks ago.
i used the cough tabs last time but i heard they werent the best to use because it prevents them from coughing junk up and getting rid of it and instead it just sits in their bodies.
if he hasnt gotten any better or if hes getting worse in about 2 or 3 days we're taking another trip to the vet.
ive called her and talked to her almost everyday this week to see what to do and she said just to watch it and bring him in if it gets worse or doesnt get any better.

thanks for your input.

Antibiotics don't do anything for kennel cough and they only suppress the immune system further.
