Vaccination Immunity and Titer

There's a big discussion on the Dachsforum on vaccination. It's really been quite interesting...if not lively LOL

To ask, because it's been a *very* long time since I worked in a vet clinic, and there are a lot of conflicting discussions I thought I'd ask here.

Do you titer after the initial vaccinations?
How often do you vaccinate and why? meaning...because it's just done or ???
Do you titer prebreeding?
Your thoughts on initial puppy vaccination and why? ... meaning what is the reason you came to the vaccination protocol you use.
Which vaccinations do you take (just found out something very interesting for myself, will be dropping corona virus.)

As always, it's my desire for knowledge that I ask, as I said it's been years since I worked for a vet so many new options (and disease.)

Which vaccinations do you take (just found out something very interesting for myself, will be dropping corona virus.) 1-2 vaccinations I wont do any more than Parvo and distemper. Any more than that IMO is unnecessary. I might even eventually go vaccination free except for the rabies of course. My pups also start going out into the world at 8 weeks. Helping them build immunity is fine but when you totally try to take over and overload their little systems with these vaccines its not doing any good for their over all health and longevity.

There is my story and im sticking to it Now let the bashing begin.

What I meant was do you titer after the initial series of vacs...first puppy vacs ...then titer? I didn't but I do titer the adults

You don't vaccinate for distemper/lepto?

Do you do any titer levels just to assure yourself that the dogs immunites *are* high for distemper/lepto/parvo/hepatitis/rabies and if yes, do you titer yearly

You don't vaccinate for distemper/lepto? Yes to distemper, NO to lepto..Altho someone ...wasn't paying attention to what she was giving and gave my boy the lepto....

Just parvo and distemper do you know how much all those titers cost?? lol. I dont do Rabies titer because I would have to just give the shot anyway. altho the vet office gave my boy the 1yr rabies so I may have to titer because I wont vaccinate again for at least 3 yrs.

Yes, I titer so I do know the cost - since learning about them it's my preference. The only time I had to revac was bringing the dogs to HI or shipping them by airline. They're too *cough* stupid to accept a titer.

Do you titer after the initial vaccinations? sometimes

How often do you vaccinate and why? meaning...because it's just done or ??? I do 1 Parvo at 16 weeks and thats it for life. Rabies is not required here, weather or not I vaccinate for it depends on the dog.

Do you titer prebreeding? I dont breed, but if I did I doubt I would Titre first

Your thoughts on initial puppy vaccination and why? ... meaning what is the reason you came to the vaccination protocol you use. I am against vaccinating for anything before 16 weeks of age, before then the pups are still covered by the mother antibodies and the vaccinating is entirly pointless.

Cali ... again I'm just gathering info. Are you against puppy vac pre 16 weeks if dam was not titered (her own immunity level not checked?)

Do you titer after the initial vaccinations? Personally, no. I might consider doing so in the future though.

How often do you vaccinate and why? I follow what AAHA recommends (which is what my old hospital did, and current clinic does). I vaccinate Bordetella every 6 months (or used to, because of grooming/daycare/boarding). Rabies every 3 years, and Distemper/Parvo combo vaccine every 3 years. I do not do Leptosporosis, Giardia, Lyme (none of these are an issue here, and the Giardia vaccine does not work)

Do you titer prebreeding? Don't breed.. so nope

Your thoughts on initial puppy vaccination and why? Once again, AAHA recomendations and veterinary knowledge. Every puppy loses their maternal antibodies by 16 weeks of age, some sooner, but no earlier than 8 weeks. It's been studied and documented than puppies of all breeds, sizes, etc lost their maternal antibodies from 8 weeks to 16 weeeks of ago. But, why take the risk of getting a puppy with parvo at that young of age? First puppy visit (8 weeks): Distemper/Parvo, Bordetella. Second puppy visit (12 weeks): Distemper/Parvo, Bordetella. Third puppy visit (16 weeks): Distemper/Parvo, Bordetella, Rabies. All three are boostered one year from this date, and then repeated every 3 years after.
