PennHip Scores on Leo
Hey all - I just got a call from Roanoke Animal Hospital and Leo's hip scores came in
![]() He scored .33 out of hip on the left side and .32 out of hip on the right side...which is AWSOME. He is 80th percentile for GSDs - which puts him in the top 20 percent of those that have been Pennhipped. Here are the pictures of his hips : Hip Extended : ![]() Compression Index : ![]() Distraction Index : ![]() I'll have him done again at 2 years...like I will do with Ruby who was Pennhipped as a BBS with a LI/RI of .40/.44 (better than average for her breed). I was just excited and thought I would share the news ![]() ~Cate |

WONDERFUL News Ceph! Thanks for posting the information - it's always great to see someone who cares enough about the breed to do the right thing and go through the procedure.
You must be over the moon. |

Lemme see if I can explain this.
OFA basically just looks at the Hip Extended Radiograph...whereas the Pennhip method looks at all three. The Hip Extended and the Compression Radiographs will show the fit of the ball in the socket and show any possibilities of DJD that might exist. That is one thing they measure. The Distraction Radiograph shows how much the ball comes out of the socket when the pup is under and the hips are maneuvered to push the ball out of socket. Dogs with very tight hips will maintain most of the ball in the socket. Dogs with very loose hips will have balls that come almost completley out of socket. There is virtually no DJD in hips that are .3 or less out of socket...whereas there is a very increased risk of DJD at .7 or above. Hope that helps ![]() ~Cate |

Degenerative Joint Disease
![]() The Pennhip Paperwork will say whether or not there is any evidence of DJD (the vet who takes the radiographs also says if there is any external markers for it as well when they send in the radiogrpah, which I imagine goes into the measurement of that) and then they will give you your Distraction Index for the Left and Right Hips and where those dogs are in relation to the rest of the breed....the idea is to always breed the above average dogs. ~Cate |
