amusing? no, not really

Many ask me how I can take care of so many dogs? how I can let them go when I love them so? why do I spend so much time with them instead of living it up with humans? how can I stand all the dog hair, cleaning and poo. It's not all fun and games but so worth it to find great people to adopt our great dogs!
Meanwhile we also have to deal with the "other" people. Normally it's those giving up their dogs but not always....

This is an exact quote email received today:

"why so I have to fill out an application, I just want to give the dog to my boyfreind as a surprise, Is this ok?"

OMG - it's emails like that which make you want to put your head through a wall.

Some people don't get it, won't get it, can't get it. We owe a responsibility to our companion animals - they are not tissue, to be used for our own gain and then tossed asside when it suits us.

But there will *always* be the evil and selfish people who will continue to do just that.

Lately it just seems to be more constant and at times it's hard to digest these types of people I guess... It's like they're coming out of the woodwork right now!

Tesa, I just weep for you, dobermom all of our rescuers - having been there, burnt out and still psychologically crippled (in some ways) by rescue I am constantly amazed and absoluely in awe of you all. You are all truly heros, truly wonder women (and men) - you are the dam against stupidity and cruelty, without people like you there is no real hope for humanity.

When we stop caring about these that we have been entrusted with, and not getting all biblical but having "domain" does not mean that we have the right to abuse, neglect, use for gain and then toss away; when we stop caring we have lost our humanity. Myself, I see it circling the drain. If it were not for people like you, and our other wonderful, loving, caring, giving (and I am so grateful for) rescuers IMHO there would be little to believe in for human kind.

I was lucky enough to be interviewed by our local Fox station once...I thought it was great! Finally, a spotlight on Dane Rescue, and the plights of the dogs. It aired at 10 PM. I got phone calls until 3 in the morning. (WTH??)

70 something phone calls...and you wouldn't BELIEVE some of those calls.
At least 3 people point blank asked for a dane for their business so they could have a guard dog. (They'd have a real nice dog house ). Several called wanting to know if the dogs had to be spayed or neutered because they had a "real nice" stud or a "real nice" bitch.

Out of those 70 calls, which I returned each and every one if only for the sake of education), I had maybe 15 who were ernest enough to request an application after my initial phone call. Out of those 15 folks, I think I had three total families that were suitable for adoption.

Stupidness runs amock, apparently. The best you can do is weed out the idiots, educate the ones that will accept it, and learn to bite your tongue and move on to the ones that ARE worth holding on to.

Ha! No app to decline she wouldn't do one. Just expected us to hand over the dog and accept the fee from her!
SFD is correct about all the time spent educating. Some weeks much more time is spent on that than working with the dogs and viable adopters! I think that is what ruffles my feathers the most. It's unfair to them both!
