Hi everyone, I own a 13 year old rottweiler/german shepherd/chow. For the past month he has been going down hill with his eating, arthritis hearing etc..
I just got home and I noticed something wierd about him. I looked at his eyes and the pupil of his right eye was completely red, It almost looks like his eye is bleeding from the inside. His other eye is a little bit red but very faintly. It doesnt seem like he is in any pain. I also noticed that he doesnt seem to know where he is going. Could he be blind? Anybody have any idea of what this could be? We are taking him to the vet in 2 days, I wish we could get him in sooner. Thanks in advance! [ June 01, 2004, 05:05 PM: Message edited by: Rocky ] |

If he is having vision problems, I think I would seek and emergency vet.... waiting 2 days may not be good for your boy
Keep us updated, and good luck to you [ June 01, 2004, 06:44 PM: Message edited by: weimlover0816 ] |

Call your Vet and tell him the symptoms. See if you can get in tonight or if he can recommend an emergency vet centre.
A thirteen year old dog is VERY VERY old. Even minor issues can be the sign of a major problem. (IE. stroke) |

Right now my eyes are blurred with tears, tomorrow we are taking rocky to the vet so they can assess him and probably put him down. I just came in from outside with him and he can hardly walk because he cant see where he is going. He was trying to find where he goes to the washroom but he kept on tripping over things. He looks scared because he cant see anything.
I cant even believe this, he was my best friend but I know this is best for him. I will be with him while they do it though, I want to be with him until his last second. we were going to try and bring him in tonight but all of the vets are closed. |

I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope everything goes the best it can. I know how hard it can be, we nursed our old Boxer to 14 and one half years. And yes, it was a full-time nursing job. At the end he had to be spoon-fed & someone had to be with him at all times cause he could fall & not get up on his own. Poor guy. We miss him still.

Rocky, is there any pain associated around the top, side or below the eye? You will actually need to touch the area, gently first, see if he moves or yelps.
This may not necessarily mean he has to be put to sleep, many dogs can get around quite well without sight, so long as you don't plan on moving in a hurry. If he is wobbly there is probably more to it than his sight, you need to seek a vet asap. |
