Why are there such strict adoption ranges?

This is a question for all of you involved in breed rescues. As I've been looking at different doberman rescues I've run into a lot of strict regulations on how close you have to be in order to adopt a dog. Even some of my neighboring states rescues won't let me put in an app since I am out of the range. Why is that? I understand the desire to keep an eye on the dogs that are adopted out but I feel like they are eliminating a lot of people who may be seriously interested. If I am will to drive hours to meet a dog and so on I think that would show them that I am serious. So, why so strict? I could get a doberman from a breeder in Cali but a rescue in Ohio won't accept an app because I'm out of their range. I just don't get it.

A lot of rescues won't adopt out without doing a home check first, and some even want to do another home check 30 days after you adopt.

So it's more of a desire to not have to make such a long drive?

lots of them just dont have the man power to travel a far distance...and also they have a better chance of actually getting the animal back if it were to not work out

It's more of a lack of resources, time, etc.

I personally checked every home before I place a dane there, then did 30 day follow ups. I also made myself readily available should the adopters have any problems with the dog I placed. This is not feasible if someone lives in another state.

If someone contacted me wanting to adopt outside of our groups range, I refered them to a rescue group in the range they were located in.

I've had to take a dog back suddenly in the middle of the night. It was bad enough driving 45 minutes away at 2 in the morning. No way I could've done it if it was further. Volunteers have lives of their own, and jobs...the free time to drive all over the place just isn't there.

Also, as mentioned, if there is reason to repossess the dog, it gets tricky once the dog is in another state.

We are an oddball. We do have a few out of state adoptions. We do not travel to the home for the inspections, we use digital photos with strict requirements and/or have a rescue near them do a courtesy home visit for us. We will not ship them though. They have to come for the meet and adoption. We will try to do everything so that it's one trip but sometimes it's two anyway. People do it and we accomodate them the best we can.
If something happens, we will somehow collect the pup back.

It really is resources. We are all volunteers who do this from home in our spare time. Everything we do with the rescues is off the job time.

We are in western WA and have adopted 1 to Hollywood CA, 1 to Idaho, 3 to Oregon and 1 to Victoria CA. Many have gone to eastern WA and I think Portland is closer than some of the eastern WA homes.

We rely (and recipricate) on the rescue network when necessary. It's all for a common goal ~to home those in need~

Teresa,

I think that's great. I completely understand that it's all about resources but I love that you guys are flexible and work with other rescues. It just seems sad that if someone were to find a dog that would work perfect with them but the they lived an hour too far then that dog wouldn't get a home. I was definitely thinking of it from an adoptee standpoint though. If I was willing to make a trans-state drive to meet and pick up the dog then what's the problem. I understand a lot more now.
