Periodontal Vaccine

Hi All,
Well, we had a staff meeting today and the vets that I work for want to introduce a 'puppy pack' that includes the regular vaccines along with Periodontal Vacc.... all at a discounted price. They believe that this will bring heightened awareness to Peridontal disease and encourage clients to pay more attention to our dog's teeth health. I guess I should have asked more about it but didn't. What do you all think of this vaccine? I've tried to research it but info is scarce on the web.

BTW...I have an Anesthesia exam on Fri...please wish me luck.

What I was able to find from the medicalnewsnow site:

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted a conditional license, which means the product has met the requirements for purity, safety and a reasonable expectation of efficacy. Long-term efficacy studies are currently in progress. . The label claim approved by the USDA for this product is as an aid in the prevention of canine periodontitis as demonstrated by a reduction in bone changes.

A study published in Veterinary Microbiology in 2005, identified the prevalence of three key bacteria, yielding new insights into the prevention of canine periodontitis.(2) The study from Pfizer Animal Health, revealed that at least one of the three most prevalent bacteria thought to cause canine periodontitis were found in 76 percent of dogs with periodontitis: Porphyromonas gulae, Porphyromonas salivosa and Porphyromonas denticanis

Myself, really not keen, it's not a proven drug and nothing so far I can find on side effects - I wouldn't want my dog to be a guinea pig; and I don't think that most Vets will let people know that this is still in testing

The new canine porphyromonas (periodontal) vaccine (manufactured by
Pfizer Animal Health) was granted conditional licensure by the USDA under a
“fast track” procedure because of the safety and efficacy already demonstrated in clinical trials. Dogs of 161 distinct breeds or breed crosses were represented in 25 regionally diverse sites across the United States. There were 653 dogs in the study (234 were less than 10 weeks of age) and 1342 vaccines administered. The types of adverse events reported included generalized pain, injection site swelling/pain, and lethargy. No significant adverse events were observed in any animal during the study period and most of these reported events were mild and self-limiting, requiring no treatment.

Not a big study group - no I think I'll pass and just continue to do what I do (brush, 1x yearly vet cleaning)

Opps we're posting at the same time. Granted it is it in it's infancy but the vets (that are dental advocates) are really keen on it. Me...I really have no opinion at the moment. I agree with brushing every day and a yearly cleaning.

I'm not keen on anything that's been through such a small trial, no long term effects can be known at this time. I'm terribly leery about over vaccinations and without more info this wouldn't be one I'd advocate (unless someone were just dead lazy and did not care for their dogs teeth.)

Raw bones should remove the need for yearly cleanings or brushing at least here it does. My 9yr old doesn't even need a cleaning and has never had one. I rarely vaccinate as it is since I would rather go vac free.

Mine have raw bones every day - but I still take them in once a year to have vet check teeth.
