Merlin Not doing so well
Well I think Merlin is going to die We came home today and he was laying on the floor hardley breathing he is kept in the bathroom with food and water while we are not home to prevent hypoglycemia. well we took an emerg trip to the vet (after hours of course) and they took blood wrok from his jugular vien and took stool samples and the stool samples came out negative for any kind of parasite or disease the blood work came back and his white blood cells were through the roof and his blood sugar was low so we gave him corn syrup and sub Q fluids and he sent him home because I could provide around the clock care where as they could not. Also while at the vet and after I brought him home he has had 6 noticable siezures I am still giving him corn syrup and water to try and bring his sugar levels up and also givin 24cc of sub Q fluids every 8 hrs he is also on an antibiotic to fight the infection but he still isn't really coherent he also isn't moving, I called the breeder and she doesn't know what it could be she just said to keep her posted also we noticed he still has his soft spot on the top of his head he is 11 weeks old it should be closed by now. Sorry if I am not making much sense but it has been a long day and going to be an even longer night I am syringing fluid into him every 20 min.

So sorry to hear this about your baby. I had a Pom pup who was chronically hypoglycemic. I fed him every two hours a very soft canned puppy mixture mixed with honey. I had to put small amounts on th roof of his mouth and most of the time he'd spit it all out back on me. We had several trips to the emergency vet when he'd have a seizure, but they would usually keep him overnight on iv's. This happened several times.
It sounds like your baby is even worse than mine and I really think he should be in a emegency vet hospital that has 24/7 care (not sure how far you'd have to go to get this). My pup eventually came around, but it took 2-3 months of constant, exhausting care, but he grew up to be a strong feisty boy! Good luck - fight the good fight. Please keep us posted. |

Unfortunatley we don't have a 24/7 vet around here they just got approved for one a the building is going to be started in a month so unfortunatley if I left him at the vet he would be there all alone and they weren't even going to try to put him on an IV drip they said he is just too small and they probably couldn't find a vien to get it into it was hard enough drawing blood for the test and they had to go to his jugular vien to get it

Pomies are subject to hypoglycemia as a breed, but I'm sure you're aware of that, as for the soft spot that's typical and should close within a few months. If it doesn't then you need to worry (also a problem in the breed.)
As for the hypoglycemia, and this is more for others less knowledgable than yourself, it is imperative that owners of breeds of dog that are susceptible to attacks be aware of some of the clinical signs of the onset of an attack of hypoglycemia. These signs can include the dog becoming noticeably confused, disoriented, becomes drowsy at unusual times, shivers, and/or staggers about. An advanced stage is the dog collapses, and goes into an unconscious state. The entire sequence of clinical signs is not always seen, so close observation of your pet and knowing when your dog is going into a distressed state, can mean the difference between life and death of your dog. Immediate treatment by a veterinarian is imperative, as recurrence of, or prolonged attacks, can cause permanent damage to the brain. Sometimes a dog will outgrow this condition since it affects puppies, on average, 5 to 16 weeks of age. However, if the dog is high strung, or has a lot of nervous energy, the dog will need to be watched carefully, and kept in a calm state. Some instances that precipates an attack might be: the puppy being placed in a new home, or while being shipped. It may occur if a puppy misses a meal, becomes chilled, or becomes exhausted from too much play. You're doing all you can for him right now, pushing the fluids and giving him Karo. It's a darn shame you don't have a 24 hr service vet, they could monitor his blood sugar levels. Wishing you both all the best, hope he pulls through. You will really want to talk with your breeder about the problems as it is probably in her bloodlines - the other puppy buyers should be made aware to watch for symptoms. I'm very sorry to hear this! Sounds like you are doing all you can, what a shame the 24 hour clinic isn't up and running yet!
Keep us posted. |
