Split Pad

I am hoping some one can help me, Bruce was out playing today with his ball and somehow he has managed to split the edge of his paw.

It stops bleeding and then as soon as he stands on it it bleeds again (trying to keep a boxer still is more hardwork than you can imagine)!!!

i have put some tape on it and a bandage and put it in a plastic sock but does anyone know of anything else i can do???

If it's deep it might need stitches - pads are notorious for bleeding profusely. I would just keep it clean and change the dressing when required. I know that it's easier said than done with any dog, nevermind a Boxer!

Liquid bandage? Or as someone else mentioned superglue.

Yeah superglue can be helpful to stop the bleeding, but I don't think it makes it anymore comfortable! Split pads can be painful!

I put lots of gooey medicine on them and then a telfa pad, then cotton, then gauze, then vet wrap.

Oh- I also soak first in diluted betadine solution.

Use pressure and a good bandage, and try as much as you can to keep him from running on it. If it is still bleeding later on tonight I might go ahead and glue it. If it has been bandaged the whole time and not dirty it should be OK- if he has been running around with it open I might want to do a good betadine wash before gluing it. When you are ready to glue get someone to hold him for you, get the glue ready, and immediately before you apply it blot up as much blood/moisture as possible. Then quickly get glue along the edges and hold them together for a few seconds. Then bandage again and hope for the best.
I like using a baby sock over the bandage and holding everything in place with vetwrap. Check his toes often- if they swell up the bandage is too tight and needs to be rewrapped.

Yep, they do mean normal superglue!

Have you got any sudocream? You could use that as it's thicker than savlon and will stick to the pad better. The savlon will do for tonight though.

I don't think you can buy betadine solution in the UK (it's normally used in surgical procedures). The closest thing is Videne and you can get it here http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/Vide...-Solution.html

BE thanks i will get some sudocream tomoz, but put on some savalon tonight.

All these different remedies has me thinking of an idea for a new thread, its amazing what stuff we can use on our dogs.

Good choices. I use BNP, a generic triple antibiotic with a petroleum base, designed for the eyes.

I don't leave toes out- asking for trouble. Whole foot gets wrapped. But then, I wrap for a living, so I know how much pressure to use...be careful, and if in doubt, don't wrap.

Betadine, Iodine, Providine- all similar. Mix with warm water until the color of weak tea and use as a soak.
