young black GSD mix in shelter

Luckey is approximately 11 months old. He came as a much younger puppy and was incredibly obnoxious. He had no training and was a horrible biter and jumper. Now he knows obedience! He will sit, down, stay, come, heel, and sit and wait patiently and stay in his kennel even as the door is opened and held wide open! He learns VERY fast and would make a great performance dog. He has been trained both with and without the clicker and all of his behaviors are now on command with a variable reinforcement schedule. He is located at the Williams County Humane Society in Bryan, OH. More information on his petfinder.com page.

Unfortunately he has been there a very long time and I have been worried for quite some time. We've been trying to find rescues to take him. We are full, and since his learning some obedience and manners I am not as worried as I was about him, but I still would like to see him out of the shelter quickly. The shelter environment simply does a number on these dogs, and when people want to take him out, the active dog that he is, he just looks completely out of control. (We are still working on this.)

We have tried contacting many of the purebred GSD rescues in or around OH. The all breed rescues are full, and my best guess is that the purebred rescues are 1) too full 2) too busy to return the emails 3) and don't think he looks enough like a GSD to take him.

That's a great looking dog. Not everyone wants a couch potato type dog. I think he'll get placed. His right home hasn't discovered him yet is all.
Keep trying to reach the rescues for all breeds and try to get him on a waiting list if nothing else. The longer he's there, the quicker they usually will get pulled out and into rescue.
If he's been worked with, it's a plus for him too and will make it somewhat easier for the rescue as he's got a start going for him.
Keep us posted on his events!

He is such a handsome dog! I'm sure he'll be placed. I wish to goodness that I could take him. I'd LOVE to. Esp. since I'm so active.
