Insurance?

I was just wondering who here has insurance for their dogs and who do you have it with? I was thinking of getting insurance for them but don't know much about it.

Every country is different...there is only one company in Australia that does it for us, but the dog has to be under 6 months old to get it. Counts me out.

Insurance has been shown not to be a good investment over the life of your dog. What you should do is ask what the premiums would be and put that month aside in an emergency fund for your pups. When you look at the deductibles, what isn't covered (in most cases regular vaccines, visits, dental, etc), you would be ahead by putting the money away and getting interest on it. After all, insurance companies need to make a profit to survive and that's after they pay people's salaries to push the paper.

Yes in agreeance here, I read the schedule for the company here, same deal, no cover for basic yearly stuff, all you got was for emergency proceedures, specialists, etc. Didn't even cover spay or neutering.

I asked this question on another forum and i remember it like yesterday. Well almost. Im with Dax on this. Dont get me wrong, i would feel VERY secure knowing Oscar is "insured" what are we tlaking about here cars? But i dont want to spend the money. Most top packages are asking an average of 65+ dollars/month. Theres about 4 companies that offer it. God forbid something were to happen to Oscar i could alway go to my parents to help me pay for it. Thats why i love them so mcuh But most of you are already FULL grown adults and usually wont turn to your parents for financial help:P So in that case, i would say Dax's suggestion is most wise. Ive never had insurance for my dog but im guessing if you do have a dog that has a disease that infects him and you need vet care quite frequently, i would assume it goes up? Just not worth it. If you got the money, its not a bad idea, but if you have to bust your butt to pay it off, not worth it. Just my opinion.

I have accident insurance through PetCare. It is 10.00 per dog month and I cover both Rudy and Jenna.

I have not had to use it but if I had put it on Jenna one day sooner I would have. When I was thinking of putting it on her, ( this happened in Cold Lake notr here ) I looked out into my backyrad and saw Jenna standing there hodling her paw up, I ran out there and she had gashed her leg , it was about 2 - 3 inches long and ran up her leg. She had just missed the vein in her leg. It cost me about 150.00 to have her stitched up, the insurance would have cpvered that but alas, no insurance, I put it on her the next day, Rudy had it already.

But, I have never had to use it. I got it at first for Rudy because he was laways getting into trouble and seemed like an accident waiting to happen but now I think I can cancel it. Both dogs are older adn listen, sometimes. LOL!!!

There is Pet Insurance.. but even being in the field, it doesn't seem worth it. We had a speaker come to talk to us about it, and I understand it well and still think it's not worth it. Unless you KNOW your dog is accident prone, it's useless. It doesn't cover gentic disorders/diseases/problems. And unless you get the supreme deal, it doesn't cover dentals, physicals, or vaccines. So what's left? You pay a monthly premium, then there is a deductible, and then they still only cover 90% of what's left! And if you're dog has cancer and you want to start pet insurance, they won't cover any health problems that were established before signing up! Don't bother.. it's ridiculous.

I have insurance for Poppy but that's because the potential treatment cost for anything here in the UK is enormous. Hers does cover dental, genetic disorders and special diets - there is an excess but if the treatment cost is high it's well worth it. I have been advised that if she gets to the age of two, doesn't have HD and hasn't had to make use of the policy then to cancel the policy... so we'll see how it goes.

Take my colleague's dog Maverick (I posted about him at the time) he was throwing up and wouldn't keep any food down. The total cost for his treatment was £1700 ($3,300 US, $4,150 AU, $4,000 CAD) - if he hadn't have had insurance he would have had to sell his car.

Thanks everyone for the info. I think I will not get insurance for now. My dogs are healthy and my vet is fairly reasonable priced. I have had some kind of major expenses in the past with my dog Bud when he broke his leg and now with Frodo's broken jaw. Especially with me having multiple dogs even at $10dollars a month per dog would be $70 per month an 840 a year wich is a little less than what I ahve spent on the two accidents over the past 2 years. So I figure it is better for me to just save some money for any emergency hopefully there will not be one amd like exile my parents would help me pay for care for them if it was a emergency.

Baby E, insurance has proven itself many times. But for the amount of serious accidents we have, and being strapped for cash half of the time, just not always everyones first priority. Having minimal is almost useless. Its covers bearly anything. Top package covers quite a bit, well because its the top on but still your left with many things not covered. I feel weird saying this because Oscar was almost hit by a car twice and if something serious were to happend id feel like an idiot. Ill take my chances
