We have a 3 year old Bichon Frise, Abbie. I am at a total loss as to what to do with her lately. She has been having "accidents" on a very regular basis lately. It started getting worse about 4 or 5 months ago. She has never been great about it but lately it has been much so much worse. I can't think of anything that has changed recently that would warrant these messes.
We haven't used her crate in about a year and a half and when we are gone we put her in our backroom which has a doggie door to the backyard. And when I find these "accidents" she runs through the doggie door before I even have a chance to fuss at her. I lock the doggie door and leave her out there for about an hour. Any other suggestions on an adult dog? It is driving us CRAZY!!

Well I would go back to potty training 101, use frequent potty breaks, going outside with the pup to instantly praise after she does her business and treat her or play with her which ever it is that you use as a reward. Also, I would definetely go back to the crate training. It takes away the oppertunity for accidents, and will help you keep her on a schedule. puppies are creatures of habit so if there have been any changes in your work schedule or social activities it could have up set her. Also, I would take her to the vet to make sure she dosen't have a bladder infection.

Not the most pleasant thing to do but it works.Next time you find a mess in the house pick it up(with somthing other than your hand)and drop it outside (on his next potty break) in the designated potty area.Put his nose next to it and let him go about his buissiness.Instantly priase and maybe reward with a treat.

I would also suggest that you see a vet and get some blood work done. This is a secondary symptom of many problems.

Definately a trip to the vet to make sure that there is no infections etc.
Then if everything there checks out - back to basics. One think that has worked for me many times - is to feed the dog or cat where they go - thus turning a bathroom area into a kitchen area. They usually won't eat where they go. Try that. Good luck. |
