Question Need help Please!!

I have a mixed breed beagle/red heeler. She is or was pregnant. Last nite she delivered 1 pup that unfortunately was stillborn. I am not sure what to do now. I guess a bit of history would be good.

We got her about 3 years ago as a stray that wandered into our yard in VERY bad shape. I tend to adopt animals, and have a few already. We took her to the vet and got her shots and managed to pull her through the rough times when we didn't think she was going to make it. The vet told us that she had been fixed already so we didn't worry about that. We know now that this is incorrect. I am hesitant to call the vet and ask him about this because this is not the only problem that we have had w/things he has told us! I will look for a new vet but in the meantime I'm not sure what to do.

I have never had an animal that has gotten pregnant before and this is scaring me. She labored long and hard yesterday for close to 14 hours. When she finally started delivering the pup it seemed VERY big for her size. We do know who the dad is (as she is mostly an inside dog and only goes out for a few mins at a time). HE is a large dog, but I thought mom would only have pups her size?? Guess I was wrong about that too. Anyway, what I'm needing help w/is it normal for a dog to only have 1 pup?? and how can I help her get over not having a pup to raise?? She has lots of milk and is whining looking for her pup (at about 3AM when she started eating the pup we took it away, we tried prior to that but it seemed to cause her alot of grief so we left the pup in the box w/her).
Help!! Please! I love my Polly and wish this had never happened but since it has I have to deal w/it but don't know how?? Should I expected her to have more pups?? Her tummy feels empty but it seems she may still be having contractions?? She shakes allover and whines and cries frequently! Looking for a new vet is something I'm afraid to do after the last one!

I'm sorry you and your dog are going through this. I have very little knowledge on this subject. I suggest reading through some other posts in dog breeding, and dog health you will find a few answers. We have a few breeders as members, they will be able to help you out when they come on. Ellie is one of our moderators and breeds labs, watch for her to come on.
Sorry I cant help more, but i didn't want to leave you hanging.

Thanks for even replying. I am worried sick about my baby. She has spent years sleeping on my bed and being a aprt of this family and I don't know how much more of this I can take. She is constatly whining and crying! Think I may have to bite the bullet and pray I can find a good vet to take her too. That option scares me to death too, but after reading some of the posts on breeding on here I am afraid of losing her more

Probably a good idea to contact a Vet. Stay calm and hang in there.

You need to take her to an ER vet ASAP. There may potentially be pups left inside her which could cause toxicicity and kill your girl. She needs to see a vet ASAP ASAP ASAP!!!!!

I agree with Weim that you should go to an ER Vet clinic right away. The chances are quite high that she has dead tissue in her. While they are at it they should likely spay her too (that will save you some money)

I would also suggest that if you don't like your current vet to look around and find another one. One you can trust and work with.

Well I broke down and called "our" vet. Thankfully he was out sick today so they were referring to another clinic for emergencies. I think we may go to this clinic all the time after this. She will be ok, Thank God! There was just the one pup that she delivered last nite, however there was a partially formed pup that was so small she wasn't delevering it. They gave her a shot to make her contract (the equivalent of Pitocin for humans), and once she delivered that she was doing much better. He did say they preferred to wait a mo. or so to spay her, give her milk time to dry up and things to return to normal, but she shouldn't be going into heat for another 4 mos or so. Thanks for the advice and help keeping calm. Either way not going back to our original vet again. Something about tellin me the dog had already been fixed that bothers me. If he can't even tell that what else am I missing about my animals!

Thanks for the welcome, LOL. As far as a pic I think we can do that but not today. She's still kinda grumpy and normally loves takes pics, but I think not today! What a way to find a group of animal lovers!
