what age should i start potty training my new puppy?

i have a puppy that is 6-7 weeks old and i was wondering if i should start potty training him right now or wait like 2-3 weeks and i was wondering how long it takes to potty train?

You can start training, but you can not start punishing for accidents. How are you planning on training?

I think you should start training him straight away, as this will lower the chance of him having accidents in the house.

You train after 48 hours once they were introduced to you home. At first they will be scared so spoil them to calm them. Than train them. Dont delay it

Yes, if he has any accidents do not shout at him yet, as he needs to get use to the house because it is a new beginning for him.

Aussie: I think you should start asap. I posted a few things in the forum "Dog Training" The information in there might help out. Also get some books on potty training and house training. Something you should consider is crate training. It will make potty and house training alot easier. And if you ever have to put your dog in a kennel this will be good also for that reason.

I started to train my dog when I first got her straight away, this was useful because it avoided any accidents that were to occur further on in the year.

Start training immediately. We trained our puppy in about a week and there have been no accidents, except when she gets sick. One thing to keep in mind is on puppies within 10 to 15 minutes of eating or drinking, the puppy will need to go, so be punctual about taking the puppy out, at proper time after eating or drinking, another thing is to get the smell in the yard. When the puppy pees the house mop it up with paper towels or toilet paper and place paper in the yard where the dog goes out, once the puppy recognises the smell and gets praised for going in the right place your half way there. I did not spank my pup at all for house breaking. I would watch her and when she would squat in the house clap my hands real loud and tell her no, then pick her up and go put her where the scent is in the yard. Lastly most dogs train their owners as to when they need to go..

I am a firm believer that praise and rewards for doing the RIGHT thing brings far better (and quicker) results than punishment for the WRONG thing. They want to please you so badly. I find the sillier I am with the love and praise when the right thing is done makes them want to repeat (and I, myself, feel so much better, too). I began with giving treats with the praise, but now the praise is all that she requires, and that isn't necessary all the time now. She is a 2 1/2 yr. old bordercollie/red heeler mix and will now go on command and I praise her to the extreme and she acts so pleased with herself. We can leave her alone and loose in the house any length of time with no problem. That seldom happens because we take her with us if it is at all possible. Yes, she is spoiled... but, unconditional love is a gift from God.

Start training right now. Praise him lots for urinating/defecating where you want him to (OUTSIDE - paper training causes its own problems) and ignore him when he goes in inappropriate places. NEVER punish him. IF he doesnt learn the best way to teach him is with crating, crate him until you take him outside, allow him the run of the house when he has been to the toilet, if he doesnt go to the toilet within ten minutes of being in the gsrden crate him again for another twenty minutes then give him another chance to go outside. Make a huge fuss of him going outside and give him the run of the house (the rooms he's allowed in anyway) put him back in the crate (immediately) if he goes in the house until he is ready to go again and goes outside.
