Hi
Hi. I am under a new e-mail so I guess my count is starting all over again.
I use to have Ginger and now I have Snuggles (will post a picture soon). Anyway our neighbor got a new puppy after their old dog had to be put to sleep. They waited a few months and then decided to get one. It was a cute little thing. Unfortunately they had to put it to sleep a couple days after we got it. It had parvo. They had to pay $150 to put it to sleep. Now besides being upset, they can not get another puppy for six months because that stuff in their yard. I mentioned getting a dog that had all it's shots but so far they haven't gotten one. The person who they got it from refuses to pay for anything but their lunch and gas. I didn't know dogs really got those bad things but I guess they do. |

Hi snuggles. I have never heard of such a huge fee to have a dog put down. Usually it is about 40.00 (forum friends please correct me if I am wrong). Maybe these people are going through the grieving process and do not want to get another dog right off. Parvo is a terrible disease and yes I do agree, these people who had the pup should wait at LEAST 6 months if they want another pup. I think what you did was absolutely right. You suggested an older dog that had all his/her shots. You offered your advice and that is all you can do.

Euthanasia is expensive! Most hospitals charge for the actual injectable, then a charge for cremation (if you want the ashes returned, more expensive), and then if they charge extra for an urn/paw print. I think over $100.00 is normal.

When we put Roger down and that was approximately 2 years ago our vet charged 40.00 and that was without cremation. Maybe it all depends where you live?

When i had to put Sally down. It was like 25 dollars but it has been 8 years sence i did that. I took her home and laid her down to rest myself. I thought that was the least i could do for her. She was my best friend and baby for 19 years.
Yes she does need to wait 6mo. before they get another one because of the yard. But like you said if she got one that had all of it shot then i think that it would be alright. By the time the pup is 4 mo. old it should have all of it shots and i don't think that it will be too old for them to get. |

Yes are neighbors were upset about it. Maybe the $150 included the visit, I don't know. I think it was the emergency pet clinic (all hours place) that they went to. We are two yards from it and I am glad Snuggles is old enough not to worry about it.

Parvo is a horrible thing. Once when I was about 16 and still living at home, I got a mixed breed pup. I was uneducated to the care it took to care for a dog and did not know anything about vaccines etc. Well my dog Quincy started acting funny just sort of lethargic, not his usual self, didn't eat, barely drank any water, etc. This went on for 2-3 days and I decided to take him to a vet.
Mind you this was MANY years ago when minimum wage was about $3.75 and I worked part time at a retail store. Well, I am told that he has something called Parvo and I could either put him down or try to treat it which may or may not be successful. I decided to treat him. Well he was at the vet for many days/weeks, I don't remember, but I do remember that Quincy got better!!!!! I had a $500.00 bill which again was a lot 25 years ago. The vet was nice and let me make weekly payments. I got a good education from that veterinarian on the importance of vaccinations and routine health care for my pet. |
