Simplest way is to pick it up as soon as they defecate. If it's not down they can't have a go at it.

just a funny question dogs eat there poop for many reasons here are some questions
how fast does he eat what sort of food are you feeding how much are you feeding and why do you feed him the amount you do the reason why i ask this is sometimes the dog is not getting enough or eating so fast he is not properly absorbing the nutrients or the food he is getting is not the best quality and he is eating his poop to get more of what he needs Ashley |

You either pick it up or keep them away from it. I'd be careful though...feces are a great way to pass worms....especially if they are another dogs.

check the dog for medical reason and maybe go to higher quality food as well. I take it the breed is a german shepHERD? many ShepHERDs are born with epi and that also is a cause for this habit. What do you feed and how much and how old and what type is the dog?

Teach them them to potty in a potty pen. I found this to be the simplest way to eliminate this problem. That way as soon as they are done you can praise them and rush them out of the pen and pick it up. Then they quickly learn the pen is only for pottying in and not for dallying around in.

It's Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. I believe it's a digestive disorder.
They dont digest the food as well and this arent getting all their nutrients...which may cause dogs to eat poop. ~Cate |

thanks Ceph exactly..... alot of gsds are inflicted with it and it is hereditary in my opinion.

EPI isn't only for GSD's though.
We actually tested Louise for it at a certain point. The main signs are that the dog is defecating large amounts. The test is the PLI/TLI/Cobalamin/Folate panel. |
