Reverse Sneeze?
My 3.5 year old GSP has developed a reverse sneeze that seems to kick in at all different times. Other people said they have heard of this but nobody seems to have good advice on the issue. Any sugestions from anyone out there? Have you had this problem yourselves?

I assume he's pulling in air quickly in a rush? I've never heard of it but I can't imagine it would be too serious. Sounds funny actually. Got pictures?
BTW - welcome to the forum. |

Reverse sneezing is common in dogs... sometimes for nothing, and others for a reason. Once in awhile my dog has a reverse sneezing attack! It's very bizarre and somewhat scary!
How often does he do it? If you notice it more than a couple times a day I would palpate around his nose and see if he has any discomfort. He could have something stuck up there.. either a foreign body or a parasite (like a tick). If he continues to do it and he doesn't have any discomfort, then call the Vet! |

He does it a couple times a day, sometimes less. When he gets on a roll it seems to bother him. In general, it just drives me nuts, particularly in the middle of the night when I'm trying to sleep. Occasionaly it ends with a big dry heave and a gag. It doesn't look pleasent for him. I'm afraid if I take him to a vet they will just assume it is an allergy and perscribe something and it won't really fix the problem and I'll be out of some hard earned cash. I'll try to catch him in the middle of an attack and snap a shot just for giggles.

One of our shelties does the reverse sneezing. We took her to the vet because we didn't know what was wrong - we thought she had a breathing problem or obstruction. The vet said it was reverse sneezing and it's when the dog tries to breathe entirely through the nose instead of the mouth. He said it is not common, but some dogs do it. It's not dangerous to the dog. He put her on Benedryl and it stopped. He said it's allergies.
It does sound weird - I wouldn't even know how to explain it. Simmie's usually end in a sneeze, but sometimes a gag instead. She insists on going outside after dark and that's when it's worse (she has a doggie door). Silly girl. Deb |

oh god yes! our dogs all of them do it all the time! Our 11 yr old poodle does it the worst! But he also has seizures sometimes too. We have wondered if there is something wrong becasue when he does it he throws up sometimes. I have found it helps when you rub their throut to get them to swallow.

Well I guess the consensus is that it isn't an emergency and that it's unpredictable if it will end on it's own. I guess if it starts really driving me crazy I'll go to the vet.
Thanks for the replies. |
