My vet visit

I had to take Denali to the vet today for her normal visit. Everybody went on and raved at how lovely and friendly and sweet Denali was. The vet told Denali 'this is the best greeting I've got all day' because she put her front feed on the table and put her paw out to shake his hand as soon as he entered (sometimes she surprises even me - normally she jumps all over). She was giving him hugs when we were talking.

I asked about teeth because Denali chews on stuff a lot. He said they were fine and if she wears them down there is a doggy-dentist in the area that he could refer us to that would cap her teeth if it ever gets to that stage. He says all the area vets send people to this guy because he has the equipment and it's his only business he does, so the area vets basically decided not to spend the money on the equipment to do animal root canals and caps and such because there's a guy that lives to do it. I just thought that was interesting.

I asked about Loki because Loki is still limping. He gave me a couple things it could be: pulled muscle that he keeps re-injuring (most likely) or early arthritis would be his next guess. He said as long as Loki is putting weight and not limping all the time, he'd like to have me try a few things instead of having me bring him in for x-rays. He gave Loki a 2wk supply of rimadyl and said if Loki limps while on rimadyl, schedule an appointment, when I schedule ask to speak to him and not one of the other vets so I can get either a tranquilizer or something else to help calm him down while on the way/in the office. I asked about bone cancer because pyrs are prone to it, and he said that would show up on an x-ray and if the rimadyl doesn't help (give the meds for 2 weeks and then give Loki an additional 2 weeks after that) then we will do x-rays as the next step.

Please, please be careful with the remadyl, some dog are allergic to it like Priska!.She started hemorreaging from the inside when she was operated for her mammary tumor and if it hadn't been for the drain that spilled the blood,we would never have known until it was too late!.If you see any diarrehea or vomiting, stop the medication at once!.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be at home when he's on it for the first couple of days. Maybe I will just give him a half dose to start off with just to see if we have any reaction.

Awww Denali is such a good girl

Glad to hear that you didn't have to take Loki in and that you got some medication for him. Hopefully it's just a pulled muscle but let us know how he gets on.

One of the signs to look for with internal bleeding is pale gums and tiny bruises on their skin (stomach is a good place to look!).

That is cute what Denali did!

I hope Loki does well on the medication and will not have to go in for xrays.

Denali is a sweetie.

For Loki I would try some glucosamine/condriotin/MSM. I use this for Jenna as she has arthritis in her front knees and toes. I add Vit C, magnesium and apple cider vinegar as well. It works for her. You have to wait for a couple of weeks for results to start to show but Jenna has not had issues since I started her on this.

I know she is still sore at times but she no longer limps and has far less pain.

The funny thing - as soon as I got the rimadyl, the limping stopped. I swear, he saw the bottle with his name on it and said 'uh-oh, time to shape up!'.

A word of the wise -- capping teeth is fancy and sounds awesome, but the reality is that it doesn't really work very well.

I did a vital pulpotomy on Louise's pre-molar after she broke it and it came off 4 months later. We ended up pulling the tooth. Canines work slightly better, but the end result is that if the dog chews on things and broke it's body created tooth, it'll break a man-created tooth too!
