Question OverWeight Dogs

My rottie/terrier mix is over weight by at least 10-15 pounds. I have talked to the vet about this and ways to reduce her weight as he is very concerned. Part of me thinks too concerned. She seems happy and is coming up on her 9th b-day.

I don't see where her weight has affected her that much if at all. She was a VERY active puppy/dog and we had a diffcult time keeping weight on her for years. Over the last 2 yrs or so she has really started to show that she's getting older and has problems getting up and down when it's cold out(I'm thinking arthritis or something similar but the vet said no, just normal old age). As a result of this her activity level has slowed, she doesn't even want to run and play anymore. Won't chase her toys that kinda thing. Her weight seems to have increased since her activity has slowed down. Even though I have reduced the amount (drastically) she eats and treats are almost to a nil state, have tried senior food and "diet" food, I still can't seem to get the extra pounds off her. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

misfitdogmom is on a distinguished road
do yourself and her a favor- go for a walk. diet plays an important role, but thats mostly to maintain her caloric intake at this point- she needs exercise to burn off some of that stored weight.

If she likes the water, swimming is excellent low impact exercise for older dogs. The water keeps them from overheating and doesn't place as much stress on the hips. Science Diet R/D is working wonders for Dax. She's almost due for another weight in. My vet wanted her to lose 25 lbs (more than 25% of her body weight).

I agree with Dax. Ask your vet about a weight loss formula such as Science Diet R/D other weight control products. You dont want to be losing too much weight at a time. You want to go at a safe pace. Also, i suggest you up your walking time to about 30 mins more a day. It will also be good for you too. Old age doesnt mean she has to slow down completely. She can still live a healthy active lifestyle. Dont let it get you down.
