My poor Ollie.. his third day with me he breaks his tibia, then we have issues with his crate training/barking, he could possibly have allergies (he chews and licks his paws). THEN today...
I left them home alone (in the living room to avoid the barking) and came home to a mess. Not a typical mess.. there were feces, but then drops of blood and mucous. Then when I started cleaning, I noticed WORMS in his feces!! UGH!! I swear this dog is doomed.. maybe I need to invest in Pet Insurance for this guy. (ha ha). I'm going to bring in a sample with me to work tomorrow and check it out, and get him some medication (probably metronidazole). And now, I have to worry about my other dog getting the parasite as well! Anyone else have these issues with new puppies? Or dogs in general? I should know better, but I got him from a pet store. I like to call it a Pet Store rescue! he he.. They need homes too, but sheesh.. he should be a little healthier than this! They had already treated him for Giardia (twice) and he has already had an URI (upper resp infection). I am hoping this is the last of my worries.. but at this point anything can happen. |

It does sound like he's had a rough start. Maybe he'll be so healthy in later years to make up for it.
I don't know if it's where I live but I have never had a single dog with worms. They don't even get treated just tested annually. (Knock on wood). |

My other dog had a case of giardia briefly.. vomiting and diarrhea and I grabbed some metronidazole and it cured her within days! But actually passing worms in the feces, never seen it before. And I live in Colorado, where it shouldn't and isn't very common either. I think that he must have had before even purchasing him, usually if they pass adult stage parasites the animal's been infected for some time. I thought about performing a fecal when I first got him, but noticed on his records that he had been treated for Giardia already and thought that he must be parasite-free!
Usually parasites are common in areas that are moist and warm! Southeast US (Florida) or others have issues.. Canada shouldn't! |
