Bleeding spot, what to do?

Jack has really dry skin. I haven't given her a bath in a month or so to try to restore the natural oils on her. Last night I was brushing her and I got 3 brush fulls of hair off of her and I discovered a spot down by her tail that was bleeding and irritated around the spot where it was bleeding. I was wonding if I should put neosporin on that spot, but I'd afraid she'd lick it off. A friend said to get some baby oil and dilute it with water and spray it on her for the dry skin problem has anyone ever heard of that? What do you think?

Neosporin/polysporin is fine to use in small amounts. Rub it in well. (the vaseline base can be a laxative in larger amounts). They make sprays specifically formulated for dog's dry skin. I would start with those and then you can experiment with mixing in the babyoil/water mixture to make it last longer.

I would also give her a tablespoon of olive oil in her food a couple times a week.

Yes, you can use Neosporin except close to the eyes or mucus mebranes. I would also cut back on the bathing. I used to bathe Max perhaps twice a year using shampoo. At other times, he would get a rinse with plain water whenever there was a need. Over-exposure to shampoos can cause skin to be dry and flaky.

I agree with adding the olive oil to the meal - it does help. also, if your vet allows you to buy meds without a visit then ask for GentaVed/Gentocin Topical Spray - it will help the sopt to heal much faster, keep it from itching, and prevent any infections. I am so lucky that my vet knows we do most of our own vetting (within reason, of course) and will get me what I need, if we agree on the diagnosis without having to make an appt. There are also shampoos out there that will help to moisturize the skin, if you go the bath route. During flea season, in addition to his monthly Top Spot K-9 drops, he can sometimes end up with weekly flea baths and doggy conditioner afterwards.
