Buddy Has Diarrhea..Pumpkin or no Pumpkin?** Update **

I have been mixing Innova with Buddy's Canidae for about a week. The first few days I mixed 1/4 Innova 3/4 Canidae, the other day I started mixing half and half and this poor dog has been pooping every time he goes outside and now today he has diarrhea! I will go back to 1/4 Innova but in the meantime, should I give him pumpkin? I have been reading conflicting information about pumpkin and diarrhea.

Won't you help me please?

Yes Pumpkin will help control it and is a great natural remedy that has not side effects. Just give a couple of heaping tablespoons of canned unspiced pumpkin. Do this for a few days and you should see a difference.

If it is really bad then you will want to talk to your Vet about the reasons why he may have diarrhea. There are so many causes and one could be a bacterial infection. Also make sure he is not dehydrated. Pick up some electrolytes form your phramacy and add them to his water or get a large syringe ( 60CC ) and mix some and give it to him via syringe being careful not to shoot it to quickly down his throat. Most dogs that have the runs are also low on electrolytes.

Hope he feels better soon.

IMO diarrhea is natures way of getting something out of the body that doesn't belong there, so I tend to let it go for a day or two.

Past that point it's a judgement call- the colon and anus can begin to get irritated from all the activity and if it is very bad dehydration is a real concern, so I will take steps to slow it down at that point.
But if something in there is so bad that the body takes these type steps to get it out, then I want to know it is out before I try and stop the process too much. It all depends on the nature and frequency of the diarrhea, and the type and health of the dog involved. A big healthy dog wouldn't get worried about nearly as badly as a tiny toy. So you observe and decide.

If you are certain that it is simple food intolerance, once all the bad food is out it will stop. Innova is a very dense food and not all dogs can tolerate it- mine never could. Just make sure he is eating and drinking and there is no fever or lethargy.

Personally.....I would go with pumpkin and also mix some cooked long grain brown rice into his food. Another thing...If Buddy likes Bananas you may want to give him one. Bananas are a natural binder. Please keep us posted Ali.

Aww poor baby. I would also give him pumpkin. I found it to be a natural way to help with diarrhea. I think Dax was the one that told me to also try sweet potato if I was out of pumpkin.

My girl Angel had a bout of diarrhea last night and I gave her a tablespoon then again this morning with her food. So far she has been runny monster free.

I have done the Pumpkin route too and it did help. I also gradually changed the diet and it produced smaller and firmer stools. Good luck and please us posted.

Thank you all, Buddy is better, he ate his breakfast..Canidae only, and I did give him a teaspoon of pumpkin. I took him outside twice since breakfast and he did not have to go I will add sweet potato to his dinner tonight. I think I will stop Innova for a few days and just feed Canidae to see if this was the cause.

Oh and Mommyo4, that's is his, feel sorry for me face

We've used pumpkin and rice water for years with no ill effects - pumpkin is almost always in the mince that the dogs eat daily. Love the stuff for helping control diarreha.
