ear infection question

So it appears Loki has another ear infection. I'm out of all the meds the vet gave me for ear infections and because it's a Sunday the vet's office is closed. Is there anything over the counter I can give him to get rid of the infection or will I be talking to my vet tomorrow morning about meds for Loki??

I hesitate to post this one because I've never tested it. It was posted on my blog as an ear remedy. I thought I"d put it out there and see if anyone else has heard of it.

Here's what they posted.

I have a recipe that I use on Palmer's ears that works really
well and there's an unintended benefit to it as well. Works on hot spots too.
It's a fairly well known but I'll share nonetheless:
16 oz bottle of isopropyl alcohol, but if he's been scratching and they're raw use Witch Hazel instead. I do automatically because I don't want it to sting;
4 tablespoons of Boric Acid Powder;
16 drops of Gentian Violet 1%, an antifungal.
Mix all the ingredients in the Hazel bottle and shake. (shake before every application too) Fill the ear and gently massage and wait 30 seconds and then wipe. Caution though, the Gentian Violet will stain. Refill ear but don't massage. Use an ear dropper to fill the ear.

Treatment: 2X/day for 2 weeks; 1X/day for 2 weeks; 1X per month after that.

Of you have a Pet Smart by you hit it tomorrow and look for Natural Care.
Underneath the words Natural Care are the words Veterinarians Best. There are TWO 4 0z bottles in this pack. One is a cleaning solution, with cloves, the other bottle consists of Ear Dry relief.

This will definately hold Loki over until you get to the vet. I had a problem with Oso's ears a while back and of course it was on a Saturday and my vet did not open until Tuesday. Dax was the one who gave me the names of these products. Dig...they worked so well that I did not have to take Oso in at all.

Hope this helps.

His ear is not HORRID - there's a slight smell and lots of dark colored wax build up. He's scratching at it and won't let me near it

I wonder if you could buy some mycostatin or nystatin cream (like the stuff for womens yeast infections) and rub that on the ear flaps....it might give him some relief until you're able to talk to the vet.

I was told with Jinjo to use a mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar, and it seemed to work really well. I just can't at the moment remember the proportions but I'm sure if you do a search online someone has it.

Welsh. The proportions are 50/50. 50% alcohol, 50% white vinager. This is ONLY for ear cleaning though. Not to be used for infections. That would be like pouring alcohol on a wound....I know if someone did that to me and I had a wound I would be screaming and juming into the sky!

I bought some ear cleaner/soother and ear drier which works wonders for the dogs ears. Dax used to get really bad ear infections but this has kept it clear for ears.

My vet recommended I use a 50/50 mix of water and Listerine (the original brown type). The Listerine is an antifungal/antibacterial. It worked wonders and cleared the ear up in a couple of days.
