Rescue Question

My husband landed the account with the local animal shelter to spray for ticks and fleas. He starts Thursday.....here's my concern. He cannot stand to see a dog in there that he feels will not get adopted. They do not keep them long in animal control, this is not the Humane Society and the shelter has very little funding. I have a feeling he is going to want to "spring" a few from certain death. Is it legal for him to adopt a dog and then try to find it a home through a rescue group even if he is not affiliated with a rescue organization?

He has not suggested this, but I know him, he is already saying how hard it is going to be to see the dogs

Atomics right, if they dont have any contract (most shelters dont unfortunately) then there is nothing that makes it illegal.

I have adopted from both a rescue organization and an animal conrol facility. The dogs that come from most rescue organizations make you sign a contract saying if you ever have to give the dog up for some reason that you have to give it back to them. Animal control on the other hand, I don't really think they care what you do with the dog as long as it leaves.

If you adopt and explain what your goal is most aminal control centers are very happy to have the dogs move out to a foster home and then a forever home.

Now everything is in a computer and at some point may question the number of dogs at your home.
Why not have him speak to the facilitator to make an "arrangement"? He can save a few lives and they get room without euthanazia. It's a win, win.
You could even apply for a state foster license to make things run more smoothly. That isn't very much, hard to get or time consuming like the IRS non profit is.

I think it's wonderful of both of you to help the dogs when you can!!!!!

I am sure my husband will make some friends (people friends!) there, he is very convincing, if he wants something bad enough, it will happen! So we will have to see what happens when he goes for his first session.

Our local SPCA knew that we were rehoming all the dogs that we took from them - they'd also call me for exotics to pull. Most are thrilled to have the additional help. Just speak with them - they may still charge you a fee, ask to do a home inspection but otherwise there really shouldn't be an issue.

Paws all Xed it works out

We got Yancey from the shelter in a neighboring county. He was to be put down the next day and my husband just couldn't accept it. He fell in love with Yancey on sight. We did not have to sign anything saying we would bring him back if we decided not to keep him.

In fact, he was not even neutered when we got him. They said we needed to take him to the vet and have him neutered and vaccinated within 30 days. They did give him his rabies vaccine. We took him to the vet the same day and had him neutered 2 weeks later. I called them to find out if they wanted me to mail them his vaccine and neuter paperwork I got from the vet or did they need to vet to send it and they said neither they would just mark it down as done!!!
