Very sick pup

Is anyone a vet or vet tech? Does anyone know what a pup could get into that would make them sick enough to cause there liver to shut down? Willows litter mate had to be rushed to the emergency clinic and is in bad shape.

Well, im not a vet but im pretty sure that a high amount of onion and even garlic can cause acute liver failure. Could be quite alot of reasons. Sorry i cant be of more help.

It could be disease as well as an ingested item. Please let us know what happens.

Anti-freeze . Dogs and cats LOVE the taste, it is sweet , like candy to them and very deadly. It can cause massive liver failure.

Actually Exile, garlic is fine for dogs, onions are not( check into some nutritional books for dogs ). If you look in alot of those feed additives like the "Missing Link" etc that they sell at the feed store, they contain garlic. Onions, Grapes, Raisins are a few of the foods we eat that dogs can not.

Here check the ingredients, garlic is in there , listed here for the Missing Link, which by the way is an excellent suppliment.

I've heard that garlic in small amounts is good for your dog, in large amounts can be dangerous. Same goes for, I lebieve leeks.

Moo, I just listed a webstie for that supplement.

I personally have never read anywhere in my continuing education on what to feed dogs and why, that Garlic is deadly. Only that it has benefical affects for a dog, and people too. I would guess, though, because it has a blood thinning effect that if a dog ate a HUGE amount then it could be dangerous as well as stinky .

Oh yes, Chocolate can cause liver failure as well. It is also poisonous to dogs.

Thank you for all the input. Charlies (willows sis) Mom live a couple of blocks from me and was frantic because charlie was foaming at the mouth and could barely lift her head. My partner picked her up and took her to the emergency clinic. The test results right now are pointing to liver disease or ingested poision causing liver damage. I am leaning toward ingested poison.. the mother is healthy and so are all the other pups.

I too have read garlic in high amounts can be dangerious. But its not as if we are gonna feed them loaves and loaves of garlic at a time. You really need to watch out with chocoloate. But it doesnt cause liver failure i dont thinkk??? The ingredient in chocolate that is deadly to dogs is called theobromine. It is a cardiatric stimulate. Consumtion of large amout of chocolate follwed by heavy excersise can be extremely deadly.

My friend went through this with his dog, some of the things that they asked him about was: pond/river water, bulbs, certain species of toad and frog and something else (but I can't remember what the something else was - sorry.)

I'm sending big hugs from the UK for your little friend.

Any news yet ? How is the pup doing ?

Hey Exile, I love to eat large amounts of chocolate( easter is here ), does that mean I am at risk too ? Oh boy.

Just kidding.
