Question Breeding with 2 sires??

Hi,

I was just wondering what your thoughts are on breeding a female dog with 2 sires of the same breed? I don't really like the idea but wanted to hear other people's views.

Thanks,

Lilly's owner

Do you mean a mixed litter? If yes - I would defo be against it.

If you mean two different litters - then it would not be a problem for me.

My two cents on the issue. If you let two males breed with a female and pups result, you have no way of knowing (short of expensive DNA) which male sired which pup. If I was breeding champions, I would want to know which is which.

Second, the only positive I could see is that you do not waste a female's heat by mating with a male that may or may not have the "goods". However, two heats per year - just means waiting a little longer to have pups. Also, knowing that the male doesn't have "the goods" means you could go ahead and neuter for those other issues intact males can get.

If you mean different males during different heats, I don't think you would be posting the question.

Sorry. What I meant was 2 sires at the same time. I just mated my dog with one sire but the owner of the sire wanted her to be mated with two different sires a day apart. I said 'no' because I didn't like the idea. But what I was wondering was if it could result in any health problems for the pups etc. Lilly has had 1 litter already and that was just with 1 sire and they were all healthy with no problems for Lilly or the pups. We mated her with the same sire as before because we know that worked well before. The pups all had lovely personalities and fitted the breed standard exactly. Also the sire she mated with is only tiny and the other one that his owner wanted Lilly to be mated with was quite big. Her reason for wanting her to be mated twice was that the other dog was dying to be mated and I didn't think that was a good enough reason.

Lilly's owner - I'm with you 100%. A dying dog is never a good reason to breed (good reason not to in many circumstances). Plus there's not guarantees any of the offspring would be his genes.

Apart from everything else that has been said, if you were planning on registering these pups you really wouldn't be able to as they are not from the same sire.

As for the reason given by the owner, nope, that is not a good enough reason in itself. I wouldn't do it.

I would NEVER breed my females with 2 sires.
I only own one stud dog at a time.
