Some rescue questions...

Hey y'all, I know I haven't been on in awhile, but work has been crazy and I've got workout classes like every night of the week. I'm trying to squeeze in forum time soon.

Though, I had to hop on real quick and get some advice. As most will remember DH and I had decided to get a dobe pup from a breeder at some point in the future. I have stumbled across a boy on petfinder who is quite close to me. I'm a little nervous about adopting as I've never done it. I just want to be sure that I've covered all of my bases before I decide to bring him home. We are driving down with Alfie on Friday to meet him and see how they get along. After that, we'll probably take a few days to mull it over. Just wondering if there were any specifics that I should be looking for or behavior trait to beware of. He was found as a stray so they have no background on him. They tested him out on a cat for me and he did just fine and didn't really care about the cat at all, so that's a plus. He is quite underweight and will need to put on some serious poundage. Any advice on how best to accomplish that. I just want to be sure that if we take him he'll be with us forever. Any advice or comments would be great. I'm really excited, but trying not to get my hopes up. I would much rather rescue than buy from a breeder, so I'm really hoping that this all falls into place.

Thanks for any comments.

He's stunning! I would just watch him with alfie and make sure hes not too rough. Also watch for any looks or things that may look like he might bite. I think it will be obvious if he is right or not for you and what things are bad. Also if a rescue person is there they could probably tell you more or know if things arent going well.

The one thing that jumps out at me is they are recommending a only dog home or someone who can socialize him.

He is 6 and has a lack of socialization around other dogs. That may not be the best situation for Alfie. Now it may be nothing, but it could also be major.

ll you can do is go see him and see how they get along. He is handsome though

I've been e-mailing the shelter rep and from what he's told me Bullet is simply a little shy and nothing more. I guess we'll see when we get there. There was one instance where another dog tried to mount him and Bullet growled at him, but that was all that happened. That was my concern as well, but my contact doesn't seem to think it will be an issue. That's why I want to see how he reacts to Alfie. Alfie is my baby and he will always come first. If there is any risk for him there will be no deal.

He is a beautiful dog! I found Mel and had no idea what his background was either. He was aggressive to other dogs, but not to our Beagle we had at the time. He was intimidated by him I did have to take him to obedience training for canine aggression, but it all worked out. They are extremely intelligent, loyal and loving, I hope it works out.
