Question Vizsla ~ Sensitive Breed?

My parent's 5yr old female Hungarian Vizsla has an on again/off again skin condition. My father has paid hundreds of dollars in vet fees and searched the web for answers. He's gotten varying advice, from food allergy to ingrown hair. I wonder if it's caused by bad nerves. She develops large, painfull looking boils inbetween her toes. She also scratches her mouth and inner ears raw and bleeding. Sometimes the boils grow so large, that they burst. It's just horrible. Right now she is on a very strict diet of boiled chicken and potato. She was doing well on this diet until suddenly the other day, she developed the boils between her toes again.

Does anybody have any experience with something like this?

We have a dog at the barn that this sounds similar to (but not exact). They determined that she is allergic to corn. And it is very difficult to find a dog food without corn in it, and then she won't eat it. So makes it hard. Plus being at the barn, she's always getting even just one pellet of horse feed, and it of course, has corn in it and causes a whole outbreak. She also has a flea allergy, and just one flea on her will make her scratch herself bloody.

So no real advice, sorry, but it is very disheartening (and it's not even my dog).

Sounds like allergies to me. Sidney gets what we call pimples between her toes if she gets one of many things that she is allergic to. Corn is the worst culprit. She will chew on her feet and the pimples burst and her feet become really red and inflamed. Her ears and mouth were also affected. She often had ear infections (stinky ears). We have her on "Limited Diet Potato and White Fish" that we get from the vet. She hasn't had an outbreak in 2 years..........since we put her on this food. Her skin is in good shape so although there isn't much more to this food than fish, pototo and vit/minerals, she's done really well with it. You might want to check with your vet and see if he carries it or if he knows where you migh get it. Ummmmmmm, let me check the web. BRB

Here is what I was looking for. These foods are a bit more expensive than some but well worth it if it gets your dogs skin and eruptions under control. When you go to the site, click on the bag of pototo and white fish and read the information that comes up. Good luck and keep us posted.

Dawn, I was reading about something called a Wet Marsh Hay larva which may be what the dog at your barn is suffering from or something similar.
