the "tie"

Hello.I am a new member and I own 2 wonderful Lhasa apsos..I am concerned..My female is 2 and my male is 9 months. this morning I caught them in a "tie". My question is : do they only do this when the female is in heat? or can they do this even when she is not???
thanks so much

Is it possible your female is in heat and you missed subtle hints? I don’t think that a female would stand to allow a solid tie unless she is ready.

That is one of the hazards of having two unaltered animals. You should likely make a note of the date and start watching for signs of pregnancy.

thank you..I would love to have the puppies as my 3 grown children each are waiting for one. Sadie the female is 2 and Peace the male is only 9 months..do you think Peace was too young to father puppies?

I also wonder if when dogs are in heat if you never see the bleeding because of the females good hygiene?.I have not noticed any blood anywhere

then this morning this happened..I am excited though as would love to have some puppies. They will have good homes

I have heard of females that never really bleed. The only way to tell was taking a tissue an wiping. It might just be a pink tinge. I'm sure a lot of owners would say "Lucky you" not to have that mess to put up with.

Don't go naming the pups just yet as there are a lot of variables. But definately keep track of dates.

These dogs are so special to me. In my "younger" years lol..not that I am ancient, but when I was a kid..we had dogs that had puppies and that was my last experience with birthing dogs. Peace, the father, is so smart..He actually mumbles "out" when he wants to go outside among other things that show his brains..Sadie is a very gentle sweet female..so I think that the puppies if there are some will be smart..I hope that all goes well for them..I am a little concerned though because our vet mentioned on the last visit that Peace could have hip displasia..Peace had been scheduled for an exray in april to check it out..The vet also mentioned that it is not as bad in small dogs like his breed (lhasa apso) but he did say best Not to have puppies..now I am worried if Sadie is in the family way. The puppies will be loved regardless. Do you know if it would be definite that the puppies would get the hip problem too if it is confirmed that Peace has it?

If Peace is showing signs at 9 months - his case might be quite bad. Whether or not he passes it on to his offspring isn't 100% either way. However, if it is confirmed you should likely consider neutering him.

As for these puppies (if there are any) - all you can do is make sure to give them the best chance possible. Proper pre-natal vet care, good nutrition and if you find them good homes that will keep them heathly would be your best course of action.

I wont know for sure till the xray anyway..the vet did put him on cosequin and he is doing great. The vet suspected it because peace was having problems going up steps. He pulled on his back legs and says he could be dyslephic.
Positive thing though is that he said if I keep his weight down and keep him on cosequin he should live normal happy life even if he does have it..so guess the puppies if they come could also manage

getting back to my original question..do they usually tie more than once?
thank you so much for your quick responses and help

Were you going to have the female spayed - becuase of you were then have it done now and that would take care of any potential pregnany.

Or you could call the vet and they can give her a shot I believe that would end any pregnancy.

I would not recomend going through with a pregnancy if your male has any chance of hip issue.
