Introducing dog to new Puppy
Our new puppy is coming home tomorrow after over a year long search. Princess, our adult adopted pound dog, was rescued in February as she was slated for euthanasia for being agressive, dangerous and they were unable to handle her. She has been perfect for us, is a great guard dog and was already potty trained. When we adopted her she was kenneled with another dog but they told us that she is dog aggressive to "some dogs". Both dogs will be indoor/outdoor. Puppy will be crated and Princess lives in the guest quarters with my brother in law and never comes in the main house. Mainly they'll just have to share outside together.
What is the best way to introduce them and avoid issues? |

How old is the new dog?
If the puppy is older, introduce them on neutral territory, both dogs leashed by different people. If younger than 4 months, it may be a little bit diferrent. If the puppy is not old enough to have all it's shots, introduce on neutral territory, but with the puppy in a crate. I introduced my adult dog (who was 4 years old at the time) to my puppy (who was 7 months) at a park that my older dog had never been to. He has tendencies to be protective of his people & territory, so it was important that the introduction was as neutral as possible. After they sniffed eachother out at the park, we brought them home separately. (He walked, she was driven) Once home, they came out in half hour shifts. First my older dog was crated while the puppy got the explore her new house, then she was crated and he was let to smell her smell all over the house. He was then allowed in the same room as her (puppy was crated) so he could smell her as a non-threat, before they were both let loose together. Later down the line though, you may have jealousy issues if the dogs do not have equal house rights. |

Older dog, Princess is about 2 and puppy is 9 weeks old. Princess is allowed to go in whatever house she wants but I have never seen her in the main house she prefers the guest house. Princess was originally going to be an outside only dog but that situation never really sat well with me and lo and behold she was already potty trained which made it so much easier to convince the other members of the household. I have never seen Princess aggressive with another dog but then again, I haven't ever introduced her to any either. I am Parvo paranoid so taking the puppy to the park before she is fully vaccinated is out of the question, although it sounds like a good idea. I guess since the puppy will only be out of her crate supervised anyway for a few months that by the time puppy is ready to be out unsupervised hopefully I will know whether the two are going to get along or not.
