Update on Widget - Question too!

Hey guys, I just wanted to update everyone who offered their guidance.

Widget has been to the vet, fecal tests showed she had both round and tape worms. Both have been treated, and her feces are now worm free.

She was also diagnosed with Demodectic Mange ("red mange") and has been started on Ivomectrin and bi-weekly baths. Right now I'm trying to find out if there is anything else I can do for her to help sooth the itch.. any help is greatly appreciated.

Demodex mites are naturally occurring and can exist on any dog. It is only when an animals immune system is supressed or not functioning optimally that they present a problem and present in number high enough to cause symptoms.
So I would focus at least a portion of my attention on building up the immune system of this dog through healthy living. Fresh foods, non-rancid essential fatty acids, good air, adequate exercise, and deep sleep help.

If this is a young dog her immune system may simply be immature. If this is the case demodex will likely improve spontaneously. I'm not saying not to treat- just that showing symptoms is a sign that the immune system also needs tweaking as well as the mites themselves being treated.

Yes, the vet provided me with a printout all about demodectic mange. I'm not asking for information about it.. I've had all of this explained to me (though I do appreciate your help!).

What I'd like to know is what I can do to temporarily sooth the itch until things start clearing up.

She is a puppy, 10 weeks old.

If they are dipping I would not want to use anything topically as it would interfere.
I would tend to keep her well exercised and with plenty of bones etc. to keep her mind off the itch.

Thank you. This is what I was wondering.. I don't want to use anything if it might interfere with the baths...

Maybe ask your vet if there is an antihistamine they can prescribe to help with the itching for the time being? Hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine, or the like.
