Dear Chopper, I'm very glad you stopped by to ask this. Your puppy should be dewormed by the breeder once before you get her. Then at 8-10 weeks you should pick her up and take her to your own vet within 2 weeks for a complete physical. My vet did give my dog a diluted set of vaccines because I live on an off the leash area. Your vet might do the same.

I don't think it's a good idea to go on vacation with the dog in 10 weeks and leaving her in a kennel would be very bad. I suggest you talk to the breeder to see if she can stay there a while longer until you can take her home and have the time to dedicate to her.

There is more information on vaccines in the Health Forum Sticky.

At only 12 weeks at the time of the vacation, your dog will not be completely immunized. She won't be safe in a kennel, nor will she be safe coming with you.

I second Dax's suggestion to leave her at the breeder's for extra time.

Hi there... Kelly the clueless dog owner here...

I'm with Moo and Dax as well. As a new (and first time) dog owner, spending time with my puppy is wonderful, one of the best things in the world, but having him 100% of the time changes everything.

You can't assume you can stay in any hotel. You can't assume that you'll get sleep, reguardless of where you stay. You can't assume (I don't think) that you can get any rental-car. You have to pay extra for him on the airplane. You need to think about what you're going to do with him when you do anything, and make sure that you can get back to where he is to meet his bathroom needs.

It's not easy! I wouldn't trade it for anything, but it's not exactly the most relaxing way to spend your holiday!

If you could wait a few more days, that would probably be best for both you and your new puppy, and give you something to look forward to when you're coming home

Kelly
