Help please

I have a 17 week old lab retriever and I had to leave her for a couple of hours this morning. Unfortunately she got hold of a bag of Science dog food and ate about 500g of it. She is still walking about but panting a little. Could be because it is quite warm today. Her stomach looks a bit distended now. We've tried ringing our vet but he doesn't open till 5 and no answer on the phone. Is my puppy in danger or does anyone have any advice please?

Shary

She's probably going to have some diarrhea, and she may even vomit to relieve herself. I'd just keep a close eye on her. She's probably panting because she's very uncomfortable, kind of like us after Thanksgiving dinner.

If it were me I would induce vomiting.

Since your pup is already over 4 months old I would think that he is just very uncomfortable. I have never induced vomiting so I could not tell you how to do it. I would wait it out for an hour or so. Yes, that dog will certainly have the runs but he will also be very lethargic like Shadow said from eating so much. Believe me, I think most of us have dealt with a pup or dog that sucessfully snuck and abused food. Please keep us posted.

In the future perhaps if you have to leave for a short time you could crate him? Crating will also help with housetraining and insures he won't be able to do this or something worse again.

Your puppy has food bloat. Depending on how much the dog has eaten, inducing vomiting either at home (with Hydrogen Peroxide) or at the vet clinic with specific medications would be very helpful and relieving.

Thank you everybody that replied. She has done several poos and seems a bit brighter now. We'll be fasting her for 24 hours and I think she will be just fine.

thank you again, sorry I tend to panic a bit with my dog.

It's okay...that's what we are here for. We all try to help each other out. Time for you to stash that food or keep it under lock and key!

i also wanted to add i think a crate is a wise investment for you. it helps keep them out of trouble when we can't be there to watch them.
