Mel Had to See The Vet

Mel has been leaving more food behind and we have been worried sick, so while I was away, my husband took Mel in for a complete blood work up. Our vet checked his entire body, teeth and gums and everything was fine there. The blood work came back today, nothing abnormal.

Our vet has been through a lot with Mel, from kidney infections, to removing a cancerous growth on his face, Ehrliccia twice and his heart disease, so he was extremely thorough with him. He seems to think since he is not getting any exercise anymore, he is not as hungry. Mel was a runner, he used to run or walk at least 2 miles per day, now he is limited to one block of walking very slow. He said as dogs age, their appetite changes also. I feel so bad, he has lost all his muscle he seems so frail.

He still acts the same, he is happy and playful so I guess that is a good sign, I just can't help worrying since he has always had such a good appetite.

Well as he's getting older it may be that his metabolism has slowed down, combine that with little exercise and I'm sure he won't be as hungry.

But at least you know that he is all good and it's nothing serious!

Is there anywhere that he could swim? That's a great non-weight bearing exercise. Maybe even a place just for dogs with underwater treadmills.

Mel is afraid of water I really would like to get him in a pool, but he gets too nervous.

If you took him to a professional physical therapist, they know how to do it to ease that fear slowly. There's lots of exercises where they aren't in but up to their knees.
