You need a medical product from the vet. Shampoos will not kill all the fleas, although you can try (be sure to leave on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off.) There are also vet products that inhibit the flea's life cycle, so while fleas may still live- there will be no infestation, as once those fleas die, there will be no second generation. Don't forget to wash ALL of dog's the bedding.

We dust with and feed Diatomaceous Earth - no chemicals so the dogs can not have reaction and the fleas can not build up immunity.

You need to treat every furred pet, every 2-4 weeks (for at least three months to kill all life cycles) with a product from your veterinarian. I personally recommend Advantage Multi (will require a heartworm test) or Frontline Plus.

Flea collars are great to use in vacuum cleaners that have bags. Just cut a length off and put it in a new bag in order to help kill existing fleas/eggs that may hatch.

Otherwise, flea collars aren't a wise choice as pets and people can have severe allergies to the toxic products in them. They only work ion localized areas as well, and don't offer safe full-body protection.

Leaf, if you use DE you may add that to your vaccum bag - will shred all the little beggers.

Great suggestion! I've gone to a bagless type so the bit of collar works, but I have a friend who uses the DE so I'll suggest it to her.

Even in my bagless I use the DE, any creepy crawler that gets sucked up is dealt a nasty surprise

Don't forget to spray or dust the baseboards around the house. Not just the carpets...
