Overcharged? or Appropriate Amount

So my dog has had a couple spots on him and we thought it was originally ringworm til one of the spots he scratched and licked at and it eventually got very large.

I take my dog into the vet today and she says it is hot spots not ringworm which was reassuring. They ask me if it is okay to shave the spots(I have a 105lb Alaskan Malamute just for reference) which I agree to. Anyways she shaves the spots and says they will get him on antibiotics.

I'm givin the betagen topical spray, 120ml is the size and then a prescription for cephelexan. Dosage size 500mg I believe for a total of 60 pills.

Now the total for all of this, which keep in mind I work at the Kennels/Vet office comes to roughly $130. It took maybe 15 minutes maximium to shave him and I had to help hold him while she did this. They gave me the cone collar to put on myself and gave no further instructions of care for him such as cleaning or anything like that. I'm wondering if this sounds like a reasonable price or was I overcharged.

Most vets around here will charge $60 just for you to walk into the examination room, then anything they do/give is more $$ on top.

The office visit I believe is somewhere in the range of $40-45 which doesn't sound bad even though I am an employee. I guess i should describe the degree of the hotspots. one is maybe the size of a dime and she shaved approximately a 2inch by 2inch square around it. The other more severe one is much bigger and I'd say if it was a perfect circle you'd be lookin at a diameter of maybe 6 or 7 inches where she shaved. Needless to say his beautiful coat looks absolutely terrible.

Isn't your receipt itemized?
I doubt that it had much to do with the area being shaved, or how big a spot they shaved. It is office call, tests, procedures, supplies, meds.
Does this price include all of the meds?

Actually that is a decent price. I know my vet charges about 50.00 a visit. Whether he sees my dogs for 15 minutes or a half hour it usually comes down to the price of the meds.

I think the price is fairly standard. I have a similar situation right now with Yancey. So far the vet thinks he just has some type of bacterial skin infection. I was charged $115.00 the last time, $38.00 for the exam, $15.00 for the skin scraping and $20.00 for cytology and $42.00 for a 3 week supply of meds.

I think it seems reasonable. Our vet visit last week consisted of Taz's examination (Onyx was left home), dewormer (for the 2), 4 month supply of Advantage (for the 2), and a fecal exam for Taz. Total bill..... $261.45

With 60 capsules of Cephalexin.. that's an easy 45 dollars, and the spray probably about 25.

My question is... if you work for them, don't they give you a discount? Or even cut the exam charge or something?! It'd be one thing if you weren't eligible for pet discount yet because of 90 day probationary period.. but they still shouldn't charge for an exam?

Otherwise.. that sounds very normal. In addition to the two meds, you might have been charged for an exam and a clip/clean charge. At my clinic the exam is 52.00 and the clip/clean is like about 30.00. That all adds up pretty quick.
