3 month old chihuahua - i need advice.

Hey all - thanks for stopping by.

I'll start from the beginning - when we first adopted her we started her on Science Diet (chicken) kibble. Holly started to get really red and smelly ears - we took her to the vet and said she was allergic to the protein she was eating. In addition to the kibble we were feeding her, she was also on liver flavored training treats.

SO...we took her off both the kibble and the training treats, and put her on Blue Buffalo (lamb) kibble. She has been on this for about a month now.
Now, she is having soft poop about once a day, all her other stools are hard and normal.

Anyone know why this is or if I should be concerned?

Puppy food? and could be the barley...or possibly the rye...(looked at the ingredients list)With my chihuahuas I use California Natural Lamb and rice...started them out on puppy food until they were about a year to a year a couple of months old. Rye and barley are watch fors in chihuahuas.

I think that the change of food was your first course of action. Has she been tested for worms?

Are you checking the ingredients list of all her treats? With Jinjo who is a poultry sensitive dog, I make sure to look at them closely as a lot of times I will find some labeled as being say "Lamb", but when you check over the ingredients you'll find something like "Chicken fat" a few words down. And remember that you're dog also might have problems with Poultry like Jinjo and not just chicken, which includes Duck and Turkey. And maybe as well, if you or someone else likes to give table treats at dinner time, make sure thats not poultry ether.
I too also suggest maybe the grain. If you can look around to see if you have a small feed store, not just the regular pet places, they usually carry different better brands like California natural, Innova, Canidae, Wellness, and Merrick.

Lots of dogs will have one or 2 good BMs a day and anything else that comes out is just soft or runny left overs. If your dog is healthy now and isn't having anyother problems I wouldn't worrie about it.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I wouldn't worry much about if she is only having soft stool once a day.

well with a chihuahua puppy, depends on weight...if progressing...and playing ability...the little ones can go downhill in a heartbeat... nothing to fall back on really...(ie fat reserves).

she is now on california natural - lamb and rice.

she is having 1 or 2 soft stools a day - about 5 or 6 little pieces.
i'm thinking it MAY because we switched her food AGAIN and she is getting use to it.

Holly has an appointment today for a DAP shot, so we are going to talk to the vet.

I think I may try a tablespoon of pumpkin puree in her food to stop her soft stools - anyone recommend this to see if it helps?

You can try the pumpkin but do talk to your vet about this.
Please keep us posted.
