Question Tick Protection

This is probably the wrong section but I didn't find it anywhere else so here goes. I am really paranoid about ticks (and there are a lot of them in West Texas) because I lost a beloved Sheltie several years ago to Erlichia (sp?). I have 2 dogs and for the past few years have used K9 Advantix on them about once a month and it works wonderful! I never see a flea or tick. My problem is that I started doing some research on it and found out how toxic it, and all the other spot meds are, so now I'm afraid to use it. Is there ANY way to keep your dogs free of parasites like fleas and ticks without poisoning your dogs? I'm desperate!

HOORAY for doing your research on topical treatments. They are BAD BAD BAD!!!!

Yes, you can dust your pets with Diatomaceous Earth. It's nontoxic to humans and animals as long as you use the human or feed grade DE. Be careful not to get it in your pets eyes because of irritation and try not to inhale the powder. It's also a great dewormer. I got mine at a local feedmill very reasonably. 50 pounds for $25. You might also want to think of dusting your yard with it so your pets are less likely to pick up any fleas or ticks.

Do a google search and you will find loads of info if your interested about it.

I would go with DE as well.
Diatomaceous Earth - Safe as Sand to Humans and Pets, but Deadly to Insects
