my 1 year 9 month old dachshund is 5 weeks pregnant, and for the past 3 days has been acting sad and depressed, she barely moves around, has been laying in bed for the past 2 of three days and refuses to leave my lap, she won't eat or drink for the past 30+ hours, and she just not herself, and she's been giving off this bad oder for the past 2 hours, its oct-1-008 - 10:20 pm, we have a crib we made cozy for her next to our bed and surrounded her with a towel to keep her snuggled.
this is her second pregnancy, the first one was sad, her litter was twins, the first 1 of 2 puppys she tried to deliver was the biggest dachshund newborn i've ever seen, and the second was miscarried, and was attached by their sacks, she did not manage to birth the first puppy, it took her over half hour to get the first half way out, and when it came out we were on the way to the vet, it had suffacated inside her during delivery. the first puppy we found out was wedged inside because of its twin having their sacks attached she was having trouble as she is about 7 lbs, the male is about 14-17 lbs. we don't have anything like cleaning supplies or rat stuff where she could get it, and i don't leave them unattended outside, she normaly runs around, very alert, like to bark at leaves from the bedroom window, her and her hubby are both akc, this is an extreme mood swing from how she normaly is, she still barks at anything that moves so im not sure if she's depressed or if its something i can get at the store to make her better. symptoms: loss of hunger, thirst. depressed/sad mood. way more cuddely then usual. please let me know of anything i can do or try to do |

She's probably sad about how her body looks.....LOL
Sorry I had to....LOL Tell her she's still pretty to you, And not to worry what the other dogs think. I'm just trying to make ya smile. I dont know anything about birthing pups, but that sounds like a vet thing to me. Better safe then sorry. Good luck with this litter, I hope there healthy. |

ok first why, why, why.....I don't know ANYTHING about breeding but even in my uneducated head, I would think that you bred her to a male that was WAY to big for her. And if it went so bad the first time, why did you do it again?
Ok heres my advice so I won't get in trouble. TAKE HER TO THE VET. |

I agree with Sand...
And from your post I hope after this pregnancy you'll get her spayed. Her hubby? You mean the SIRE? Something you can get at the store? Take her to the vet immediately and when you do I would make her appointment right then and there for her spay. Hopefully she makes it through this pregnancy without any complications but for future reference, I would leave breeding to the pros. People that know exactly what's going on and wouldn't need to ask for advice here on an internet forum (not that I think it's bad that you have). If your breeding, you should be educated and well versed in the process, or have a mentor helping you with your first litter, erm, second. Good luck and I hope everything turns out alright. |

ok first off the male is basicly the same size she is but the male is just built a little thicker then she is, second she had problems because it was "twins" and they were "attached by the sack" and not like usual which is the cord, and the puppy was "wedged" by the miscarried puppy, she only had two and the other one miscarried which means the 1 puppy got what normaly 8 would get during the pregnancy.
im not ignorant to breeding dogs, but i haven't yet in my 4 years come accross a dachshund that won't run through the house for the fun of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------- i just want to know if she has the signs of being depressed, im not 100% sure but it might be from what happend with her first litter, but its odd that she would all the sudden not eat at all, not even doggy treats made from real meat, she won't touch water, i tried giving her the water from rice, and yes i know rice will bloat their tummies which is why i gaved her just the drained water, its like a g.i. cocktail for dogs if their sick, but she wouldn't drink that either. i just want to know if theirs anything i can try to coax her to drink or eat, and thank you for the pregnant joke, it lightened the mood a bit, my wife is also pregnant, hopefully not a litter tho lol, but i'de just like to know if anyone has ideas of how to get her to eat or some kind of something. i would call a vet but theirs none close enough to see if they make emergency visits at 11 pm, and a vet is my last option. |

I don't see how that wasn't nice Bear.
It's honest and sorry but I can't sugar coat it anymore than that. It's facts: VET, breeding for professionals who KNOW what they're doing, get the dog spayed and hope everything turns out fine. What exactly isn't nice about that? And what exactly is the point in accusing my post of not being nice? OP - Do you have a mentor that you can call that could give you an idea if it's too late for the vet tonight? Someone that's been breeding for years that might be able to help you out? I know nothing about breeding but due to her previous complications I personally would be very worried. ETA - Posted at the same time. What about baiting the water with some type of broth? I use chicken broth to bait my dogs water before we go sledding so they don't dip, maybe that could help get some fluids into her. I'm not a breeder, but I'm not sure if feeding her irregular foods that she might eat is a good thing if something is possibly wrong. My trainer who breeds SCWT had to spay a prized female recently as she gave birth to two pups as well, one was stillborn and the other was mutant-like it was so large, registered as the Solitaire Man appropriately. It was an extremely tough delivery for her that was done by emergency c-section. It was a tough decision but my trainer made it then and there as she was already opened up to be spayed. I'm not sure if this is common, but a rough first pregnancy like that is usually indicitive of problems if you decide to breed again. I would keep a very close on her and hopefully you can get her into the vets tomorrow. |

I know everyone ment well. I just thought considering the problems they were having with there dog. A bit more tact was in order. I don't have any experence with breeding dogs, maybe they don't know as much as you guys do. I just thought help now...scold later. Just a thought.
