Hypothyroidism - Picture Journal

G&H gave me the great idea of posting a picture journal of Roxy's hopeful success with her thyroid meds.

Hopefully I'll be able to get pics once a week.

So we start with her first day on thyroid meds, the official "Before":

Roxy's complete stats:

DOB - Setember 24, 2005
Weight to date - 97.9lbs
Food intake - 1 cup, once per day
Excercise - Moderate to High
Energy Level - VERY low

Free T4 - 16.5
T4 - 14.5
TSH - "Normal"
(She's due to have her blood checked again within 4-6 weeks and I'll post those results as well)

Her dosage doesn't come until next Tuesday so she's taking one and a half .6's twice per day which equals out to, 1.8/day. Once her meds come in she'll be getting one, .8/twice per day equalling out to a total dosage of 1.6/day.

Okay pictures:

Okay, this may be a stupid question, and I will soon be knowing the answers soon enough, but is hypothyroidism in dogs as same as in humans? Same side effects? Just curious. Hypo means the thyroid isn't producing enought and hyper too much, right? Or do I have it backwards, lol. It is early and the baby is wanting me to get him.

She is a very pretty girl! I wish my Dante would just stand for a picture, he runs, very camera shy. Her coat looks so shiny!

Your right Pammielu.

Roxy's thyroid is underactive and from what I've read the symptoms are basically the same; depression, weight gain, low energy levels, aggression? (err, grumpy for people! LOL). I'm not sure if people get skin issues but that is a dog symptom.

The vet told me over a year ago that Roxy's ideal weight is closer to 75lbs! I believe she weighed around 80-85lbs at the time and looked good I thought, so maybe 75lbs is asking a bit much, we'll see. As I said in my other post, people forget because of her pin head that she is half/Rott!

My vet said she always reccomends larger dogs ideal weights that are technically a tad underweight.

I haven't noticed any changes yet! ROFL! She is grumpy this morning though! LOL

I don't have skin issues, but all my hair is falling out!!! Well, I am not bald but it continuesly falls out and I have all kinds of hair sticking everywhere from being so many different lengths. Grumpy??? My DH says it not as nicely. And actually the only thing different, even my Dr. was stumped, was that I lost over 30 pounds before they diagnosed it. I even had it checked during my weight gain problem. Come to find out that was prediabetes. Not complaining about not having the weight problem though Energy levels sucked, not as bad now as I have been on my meds for almost a year.
