lhasa apso eyes
Hi..is it or is it not good to trim the hair around the lhasa apso's face? I heard that they need it on their face because of their bulging eyeballs.
My one lhasa got mats under his eye from sleep crud and I had to cut the mats out there. I wonder how they do see with that hair in their eyes..any suggestions will help karen |

I pick the junk out of my dog's eyes every day or two, there isn't very much, but no point in letting it build up.
They can't see with the hair in their eyes, so if he'll let you, I'd cut it. |

I cut the hair around my Lhasa's eyes all the time. She enjoys it much better short than in her face. I never heard anything bad about it though.

I was wondering the same.
I took my Lhasa to the groomer's today and they cut around the eyes. Someone told me that was a bad thing to do so I was wondering if it was true and do I need a new groomer?

No, it will not hurt to clip the hair around the eyes.IMO If you're really in doubt though and want an educated opinion, it's best to ask the Vet. I have never seen a problem with this, but I'm not a Vet., I'm a groomer.

Lhasa owners use all sorts of methods to keep the eyefall out of their Lhasas' eyes. Here are some suggestions for keeping the eyefall pulled back. You'll have to experiment until you come up with a suitable hairstyle for your Lhasa.
If your Lhasa does not have a thick eyefall and if she will wear barrettes, you can either brush the eyefall back and secure it with one barrette or make a part down the middle of your Lhasa's head and fasten a barrette in either side. If barrettes are out of the question, either because you have a male and feel funny putting barrettes in his hair, or because your dog's eyefall is very thick and a barrette simply will not hold the hair, or because your dog prefers chewing barrettes to wearing them, you can use small latex bands to secure the hair. Brush the eyefall straight back and put a single topknot on the head (modified Shih-Tzu style) or part the hair down the middle of the head and put "pig tails" on each side. The latex bands come in a variety of colors from black to electric pink. If you would like to try braiding your Lhasa's eyefall, follow these steps: 1. Part the hair exactly in the middle of your Lhasa's head. 2. Next you will need to section the hair that will be braided. The thickness of the section will depend on the thickness of your Lhasa's eyefall, but usually the section will begin somewhere between the middle and outside corner of the eye and go back about two inches or so. You just have to experiment until you find an amount of hair that is comfortable to work with and looks right for the shape of your dog's head and eyes. 3. Divide the large section of hair into three equal smaller sections. Mist lightly with water, coat oil, or coat conditioner to make it easier to work with. Coat oil or conditioner helps prevent matting and tangling. 4. Begin braiding by crossing the section closest to the eye over the middle section. Keep the braid close to the Lhasa's head and continue braiding until you run out of hair. 5. Fasten the bottom of the braid with a small latex band. The braids should lie close to the head. If they stick out, you have done one of these: braided too tightly, tried to put too much hair into the braid, or started at a right angle to the dog's head. In any case, you will have to start over. That's basically it! The braids will have to be brushed out and re-braided every few days. Never leave them in for more than a week without brushing through them, just in case tangles are developing. |

i am a trainee groomer and we trim the hair around the eys unless it is natural as most owners can be botherd to even get the gunk out of ther dogs eyes then by there next apontment they are welded on
![]() with my lhasa i am growing his coat as when i got him he had to be shaved with a number 10 as he was so matted up he is now about 3 or so inches long and i am growing his eye fall as well. if u go to a fashion shop i go to clairs exsesories and get the little band nice and cheep and either put it in to a bunch or braid it with practice u can make it look nice but lhasa have lovly long eye lashes to keep it out of there eyes so dont worry they will be able to c where they r goin lol, i sometimes trim the hair in the corners of his eyes to keep them looking tidy and if u just wipe the eye boggers out and if they get hard then just wet them with a bit of cotton wool ![]() hope this helps a bit |
