Unhappy HELP! I'm confused people..vets saying two different things..

ok my son got a puppy last week, which the puppy was full of worms...took him to vet to get medicine last week. Hershey is still pooping out worms (long round white worms) appear dead. are the eggs dead also? is it safe to hold him? Can me or my kids get worms from holding him or him licking us? what are the chances of humans getting round worms? Hershey is 6wks old btw. My 6 week puppy, hershey had a dose of worm medicine from the vet last week. He is passing dead round worms in his poop yet and I asked the vet can we get roundworms from holding the puppy and if we can get them from puppy licking us and he said yes?! I do not see how for another vet said no. I also asked if worm medicine kills the eggs and he said no.....

I too am dealing with a horrendous worm infestation at my house, and yes, I have a little one here as well so I understand your concern. Here's my input to you...
Can humans get roundworms from animals? Yes they can. How likely is it though, well you would have to ingest an egg. This means handleing poop, or something poop was on, or directly touching the dogs behind, and then putting fingers in or near your mouth. Gross huh. Well kids are way more likely then adults b/c they tend to wash there hands less, and handle things more. As long as you clean up his poops as soon as he does them, and make sure you and kids wash hands well after handleing puppy, they should be fine. Its not as often as you would think.
In terms of if the worms are all dead and rid, my advice, let him finish clearing his system of them, wait about a week, and have a fecal run. The vet will check his stool for eggs, and you will know then. Average time frame to finish pooping the worms out is 5-7 day, and worm eggs tend to begin hatching approx 7 days after they are laid. Worms are tricky, b/c everytime your dog licks his paws or bum, he is potentially ingesting them again, and the cycle starts all over. Just make sure you keep him, his area, and your hands clean until you know they are cleared up.
Best of luck to you! And welcome to the forum.

Onyx hit the nail on the head. You get the worms by ingesting the eggs, and the eggs are in the poop. You cannot get the worms directly from handling the dog per se. Practise good hand-washing skills. Clean up poop immediately, and keep all over animals (cats and dogs) away.

Welcome to the forum!

Onyx is the queen of worms right now but in a way it's a good thing. She is going through the same thing with her pup and she can tell you exactly what to expect and what is going on. She also educated many of us in the forum about worms.

Thanks Onyx...and that is meant in a super fantastic way.

That is an excellent thing to do. This way all dogs are cleared from infestation.
